I have been spending all my time in the country. No DSL, no cable, it sucks. I have just ordered a system from starband. Beats a blank.

Honeyslut 02-12-2003 12:16 PM

I am in North Cal and am using direcway.com

kenny 02-12-2003 12:17 PM

Earthlink also has a boardband system for satelite. But they pissed me off ounce upon a time

I had a direct TV it was only down, had to use a phone for up. Worst thing yet I had to use AOL. It was cheap but not worth it.
I have two direct TV satelites interent capable. Can you me a little more info? I can cancel that starband and save a grand.

Cancel the Starband if you still can, it sucks. My friend had it for a year and finally was able to cancel it.

I have the Direcway/ DirecPC, powered by Earthlink. They are better than the Starband from what I have read and by my experience so far.

By no means is it as good as DSL or even the newer microwave wireless recievers. But if you live in an area where those are not available I'd go with the DirecPC made 2way dishes. Several companies ofer them.

I should probably go with earthlink. I currently have 2 direct TV dual dishes. Is it possible to have it upgraded for broadband or do I have to buy a 3rd dish?

Lensman 02-12-2003 01:14 PM

I have Starband in Tahoe.

Not bad, but latency is inherent with satellites.

scoreman 02-12-2003 01:17 PM

Before you sign, make sure you understand their fair use policy which dictates how much you can download in one day. Directway is only about 140 mb per day and then they will throttle you down to like 5k/sec for 24hrs as punishment for being such a leech on their bw.

AOLGuy 02-12-2003 01:20 PM

how is the down and upstream on these?

advantages over DSL or cable?

I could always use more speed.

kenny 02-12-2003 01:21 PM

I already ordered the starband system. It can have three computers online at ounce. They better not charge me for extra bandwidth. I thought it was for unlimited use.

unlimited usage and unlimited bandwidth are two totally seperate things. ISP smoke and mirrors....

not sure there
i have dishnetwork dual dish for my TV's and for them it was a totally different dish. dishnetwork affiliated with starband.

pretty sure the same for direcTV/DirecPC/DirecWay
it's a pretty big dish and since it is 2 way has a more elaborate pointing system, and a huge LNB.

Upstream relatively sucks, usually it's 8KB a sec upstream for me. If I open two ftp sessions i can get 2 at 7KB a sec. The 3rd one I try to open is way slower and doesent help much.

Downstream during peak times is usually never lower than 100KB a sec and during off peak I am usually over 300KB a sec, wich is pretty dam fast.

It's decent once you get used to the 1 sec lag between pages and the outages during heavy low clouds and heavy rain.

what do you think of Direcway? I got it about 6 months ago and I can't wait for my year long aggreement to end. It's slower than old people fuck and it's over priced. I would not recommend Direcway to ANYONE.

dav555add 02-12-2003 03:15 PM

I thought directv was ending their internet satellite service

pornJester 02-12-2003 11:23 PM
