What happens if they run out of cash, and cannot afford to send food and water to Mars.

i like it...start farming there before people even show up. Domes ready to be sealed, in place over soil that has been treated for years already. Lichen and other artic hearty plants and fungi can be unleashed on the planet. Of course you should have a few automated factories who only pump out greenhouse gases.

sounds like a one way trip. you'd have to be mad to want to spend the rest of your life in one of those domes. And just imagine if one person there goes postal - nowhere to run!

If I was to go and claimed a lot of land, I wonder if that would be legal. Or would ownership be the firm who sent you there.

It may be worth going just to claim lots of land as this way years later your family could be very very very very rich.

Well, it would "for sure" be a one way trip, and only for those capable of doing such a journey. I think it sounds like awesome awful scary trippy trip!

Either way, if they can pull this off, it is for sure a move forward into the latest space age. And I am happy to be able to live to see it.

Yes this is a one way trip. I read about this before. It's not a bad idea except that since people would be forced to live in those domes and could not venture (much, if at all) outside, and since new people would only arrive every couple of years, I'm betting that:

- People will go crazy
- Won't be able to reproduce fast enough
- Won't have enough genetic diversity if they did
- Will kill each other before the population could grow

What really needs to be done is to develop a faster, cheaper way to get to Mars AND back (See 5 ways to do this at Wired.com http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.12/mars.html)

The guy behind that did an AMA on Reddit a week or so ago and basically got laughed off the site which is impressive considering how gullible Reddit can be.
Basically he has a nice website and an idea to fund it with a Mars Big Brother reality show.
No finances, no technology, no real plans.
