Question 4 Pet Owners

Do you actually switch up the food for your dog/cat? (not including treats)

Or do you give them the same basic food every day?

:helpme

Evil1 05-19-2012 09:46 AM

switch, do you want to eat the same fucking thing every day?

SuckOnThis 05-19-2012 09:46 AM

Same food, unless you like your floors covered in diarrhea.

I swap a round with basic kibbles type food. some times I add raw round beef, sometimes canned dogfood and some times dogfood in a loaf that is kept in the ridge... sometimes just kibble. why

L-Pink 05-19-2012 10:15 AM

95% is her basic food which never changes but I will add in vegetables, chicken, steak pieces on occasion.

John-ACWM 05-19-2012 10:16 AM

I have the same dog food for years and mixing it with a few others a few times a week.

I guess I'll have to inform my dog she needs to shit all over the floor. :thumbsup Apparently she is unaware

bronco67 05-19-2012 10:27 AM

Once I found something that works for my boys sensitive stomach (Bli Jac), I stuck with it. The dog doesn't know the difference between eating the same thing every day, and having variation in his diet. Dogs don't even have a lot of taste buds. Their whole world is built around smell.

His poops come out like clockwork, and are perfect brown logs easy to bag.

Pics Traffic 05-19-2012 10:28 AM

Always the same

Same here, our dogs both have sensitive stomachs and need to me on a special diet.

baddog 05-19-2012 11:17 AM

Buddy likes what I feed him, so no sense changing.

spunky99 05-19-2012 11:32 AM

same food.. the boston terrier gets the exact same every day, the cat and the chihuahua get the same brands of food but different flavors for some excitement in their lives

Switch it up!! Give them options!

Options? I love my dog, but he's a dog. His option is the food that doesn't contain a bunch of fillers, and also doesn't make him have the squirts.

Captain Kawaii 05-19-2012 11:47 AM

If i gave my cat anything other than trader joes canned tuna for cats i would feel the cold hard steel of a swithblade while I slept. we've tried change ups...either pukes or won't eat.
we also mix in stuff we eat a few time a week...he likes Japanese and Italian the most.

pornguy 05-19-2012 11:54 AM

My dogs prefer blood so I give them raw beef as much as I can. also as many bones with meat and blood on it as I can.

Many kinds of animal should have the same kind of foodevery day. Their stomach can easily get messed up otherwise.

grumpy 05-19-2012 12:23 PM

we switch, fresh meat and veggies.

That's what we do - a couple little bites of different things. I understand that's what is healthiest for them - a consistent staple food augmented with small amounts of other items. Dogs and cats are NOT omnivores and aren't designed to eat all the things humans eat.

beerptrol 05-19-2012 12:48 PM

I always give them the same kibble(not the cheap shit), but change up the flavor of their canned food while sticking to the same brand. Once in a while I make them chicken and rice, or they get left over grilled meat.

thegreatestporn 05-19-2012 12:50 PM

Dry food during the week. On the weekend they get wet food in the evening. They love weekends. Two cats, two dogs.

Webmaster Advertising 05-19-2012 01:09 PM

Our 3 dogs, lab, min-pin and American Boxer, all get the same food twice a day, once in the morning after they come in from pooping, once at night before they go out for their last poop.

On special occasions, Christmas, New Years or large family gatherings when there are a lot of people here, they get wet food as a 'treat'.

Randomly they will get scraps after we have eaten but to give them a 'treat' they each get a rawhide chew once a week, which helps keep their teeth tartar free.

Spunky 05-19-2012 01:10 PM

Kitty is spoiled and gets only the best dry but I mix it up with some wet every other day

We feed grain free all the time. We switch the flavors periodically, but comparing a dog eating the same thing to us eating the same thing daily is silly. Look at the ingredients...there's usually multiple meat sources, as well as veggies and fruits in the food (at least high quality foods, anyway). I know I don't eat buffalo, chicken and salmon at the same meal, but dogs do, so mixing up the foods isn't comparable to us eating the same thing day in and day out.

As far as switching foods up causing diarrhea, that's most likely to happen if you make drastic switches, like if we took our dogs from the high protein grain free diet they are on now to some cheap shit full of grains, with low protein and lots of fillers.

We've gone as far as switching from Before Grain to Natural Balance Alpha:

http://s.petco.com/assets/product_im...633222280C.jpg

but since they have similar protein levels and have no grains, we never have a diarrhea problem. We've also fed Taste of the Wild (also grain free).

http://www.westernfarmcenter.com/ima...-cat-foods.gif

But with any brand, we do like to rotate the flavors. It's not really a big deal to the dogs, but it makes us feel better. :)

And for the record, my wife is a hobby breeder, and we've done a lot of research on dog's and puppies' diets, so I'm not talking out of my ass here.

Not sure if that's a compliment or I should lock the doors...

Jet Set Cat 05-19-2012 01:48 PM

I had mine of Taste of the wild but with the recall I switched him kind of abruptly to
Acana and I feel bad because he did come down with diarrhea. Poor little guy still didn’t do a thing in the house, just sat by the door and whined when he had to go, and did he go.

Now I have him on boiled chicken with rice and doing fine, he’s even learning to catch a frisbee.

http://websfinest.com/cliff-2.wmv

Soon I’ll start introducing him to the new food but this time gradually.

Barefootsies 05-19-2012 03:26 PM

I typically have 2-4 different flavors, and switch it up every day. They (when home) will also get a middle of the day treat. This also varies across 4 flavors.

My cats rarely have an issue with diarrhea. When they do, it's a brand new cat food. By new, I mean one they have never had before. Occasionally that will happen. Rarely with one's that are simply rotated over time. Some of which like tend to like better than others.

Mr Pheer 05-19-2012 03:51 PM

I only have a Parrot and his food gets prepared fresh every morning, but yes I change it up according to what I have on hand. If he doesnt like something that I put in his dish, he just flicks it out and eats the rest.

PornoMonster 05-19-2012 06:03 PM

I keep the same Food, that I found works well...
Then I buy a Bag of something else that is also top grade, and mix that in. I switch this second bag to diffferent ones from time to time, so the dogs are not eating the same stuff over and over.

IE If I am to give each dog 3 cups of food a day I give 2 of the main food and 1 of the secondary food.

Here is a VERY good link for Dog Food

God, my beagle is so FAT....all he wants to do is eat! If you try to cut him back on food, he just wanders the house endlessly searching for food and will start trying to eat plastic items.

Agreed...

Our yippie little dog cannot switch foods or it's fucking shit city... and table food ends up with an expensive vet visit because she shits so bad blood fucking squirts out... (I hate when kids visit us, cuz they can't help but friggin feed the damn dog half the shit on their plate either by being sloppy and dropping the shit on the floor or out right feeding her).

now on the other-hand we use to have a German Shepard and that bitch could eat anything...

Kiopa_Matt 05-19-2012 09:19 PM

Yeah, all the time. Majority of the time they just get dry dog food, but I switch up the flavors. Sometimes pour a few raw eggs on top, and mix them in with a fork. They love it, and keeps their coat shiny. Then sometimes they'll get canned dog food.

Then every 2 or 3 days, whenever I'm in the mood, I'll cook them up a nice meal. For example, if I'm making a chicken stir fry, I'll chop up a few extra chicken breasts, then finely chop up a bunch of potatoes, carrots, maybe some broccoli, etc. Throw some bland spices on it, mix it all up, and they love it!

Other times, when I'm lazy and want to give them a good meal, I'll just goto the market and grab a bunch of different meats on sticks (chicken, pork, liver, etc.), throw some steamed rice in, some bones, maybe some chicken wings, and some other sauce type stuff. They love that too.

tony286 05-19-2012 09:23 PM

different schools of thought. some say change some say dont. I use the same, a lamb and rice and add tablespoons of pumpkin to it. Its good for them

PornoMonster 05-19-2012 09:25 PM

I also use lamb and rice! Has worked Great. I do sometimes put a Supplement powder on the food, and or like I said before add a small amount of some other.

candyflip 05-20-2012 04:24 AM

When you change their food you fuck up their digestive system. It's best to keep things as close to the same as possible. Same brand, different flavors.

Jet Set Cat 05-20-2012 05:08 AM

I’m not seeing any mention of the major recall by Diamond Brands; they make some of the top dog foods including Taste of the wild.

It was very serious recall, dogs were getting very sick, I believe a few died, even people that handled it were getting seriously I’ll.
I was an avid user of that brand but now I won’t go near it with a 10’ pole or any other brand made by Diamond, and there are plenty.

It’s the same old story, over expansion puts quality control on the back burner.

I will be using Acana for my guy because I like their policy. They won’t by from just any supplier and it takes plenty to be approved as a supplier for them. A while ago their Salmon supplier was unable to fill their orders so they held up delivery of that food in lieu of using just any Salmon.

Sabby 05-20-2012 05:12 AM

OMG my digs are spoiled...

(I call them 'Digs" from the pink panther movie lol)

Sabby:)

Sabby 05-20-2012 05:18 AM

Switching diet = runny diareahh shits on my carpet.

Proceed with caution.

bronco67 05-20-2012 06:18 AM

Great food right here...this is what my Lab gets.
http://i.imgur.com/9LBdd.jpg

10 lbs of chicken in every 15 lb bag. At least that's what they claim.

Sabby 05-20-2012 06:21 AM

I wish they would show how many calories on the food label but they dont.

Sabby:)

Sabby 05-20-2012 06:58 AM

for treats they love those "chicken tops" rawhide bones with dried chicken.

And I feed them lean cuts dog food.

Sabby:)

J. Falcon 05-20-2012 08:21 AM

Same basic food everyday for cats and dogs. Only when they are puppies or really old do we switch to special foods. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats.
