Carroll Shelby died today. Sad day for car lovers.

For those who don't know he made some of the most iconic muscle cars in US history. He is one of the great automotive minds.

He served in the Air Force in WW2 and got a heart transplant in 1990. After his surgery he founded a charity that worked to finance organ transplants for kids.

As an owner of a 67 Shelby Mustang I have always admired and appreciated his brilliance.

I broke the car out today and took it for drive with the top down and Springsteen's Born to Run blaring in memory of Carroll. He will be missed.

Carroll Shelby was quite a man...

When he was younger:

RIP Carroll Shelby

I had a black 68 KR500 fastback. Really liked that car.

For chile fans Carl Shelby chile mix is pretty good.

RIP .......

No! No, no, no, no. I wondered why Top Gear was spamming Carroll and Mustangs today. Damn!

CDSmith 05-11-2012 09:16 PM

Minte will be heartbroken.

When I was a kid in grade school in the early 70's there was a teacher who had a cobra GT. She was blonde, hot, leggy and busty, and she'd go ripping out of the teacher's parking lot every day spinning her big fat tires and wearing these big bug-eye sunglasses.

I remember her car as much as I do her. They don't build em like that no mo'.

I never knew he made a chili mix. I'll have to find it and give it a try.

About 5 years ago there was a car show in Seattle he was supposed to appear at. He cancelled due to illness. I was bummed. I was hoping to drive and have him sign my car LOL

astronaut x 05-11-2012 09:23 PM

he lived a good long life. no need to be sad.

I had a similar experience only a lot less hot. The metals shop teacher in my high school built a cobra kit car. He made the frame himself in the shop and let the kids help as much as they could. He finished it when I was a Junior. It was a kit and not the real thing, but he had a 427 in it and it looked like a million bucks. Whenever it was sunny he would drive that thing to work and you could hear it coming for half a mile.

R.I.P.... Major Mustang fan here, he'll be missed

:bowdown Carroll Shelby

One of the greats! I always wanted a Shelby Mustang...

SilentKnight 05-12-2012 04:09 AM

I never knew he was responsible for the Dodge Viper too.

The AC Shelby Cobra was always my "when I win the lottery" dream car (the classic blue with white stripe).

The passing of a legend. A sad day for automotive buffs. RIP Carroll Shelby.

RIP, He wasn't at Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale this year... they said he was sick recovering :(

candyflip 05-12-2012 05:06 AM

I read that he caught something from motorboating some big titty show girl, ended up with pneumonia and died.

LiveDose 05-12-2012 05:21 AM

My neighbor has an AC Shelby Cobra. Now I know why he was driving it around yesterday.

R.I.P.

He was the man. RIP

I am suddenly reminded of the time I drove a Dodge Shelby from Houston to LA. Around Van Horne we lost a wheel bearing. In LA that is no problem; in Van Horne, TX - very big problem.

The Daytona used wheel bearing of a size not consistent with any other vehicle on the road. No point hitting the wrecking yards (although I did). Had to wait for someone to go to El Paso and back to get the damned part.

bronco67 05-12-2012 10:03 AM

Shelby represents a strong desire I had for a car that I couldn't afford at that time in my life.

hahaha - I remember in 64 or 65 I used to read Rat Fink comics and became familiar with the Cobra. When I saw one in real life I told my dad that was the car I wanted when I got my license in 3 or 4 years. He just laughed and said, "you could not afford the insurance."

That is probably more true today than it was back then.

VS_Jeff 05-12-2012 10:41 AM

RIP Cowboy.

I remember when the Viper first came out and Car and Driver magazine did a test comparing it to the Shelby Cobra. The best line was when they were talking about the speed and handling and they said going 80 mph in the Viper is like doing 80 in a very well designed sports car. Doing 80 in the Cobra is like doing 80 on a skateboard.

Sounds like fun to me. :)

Deej 05-12-2012 10:03 PM

The only mustang Ive ever liked...

Good ol' RF. I got to meet Ed Roth a few years ago in Las Vegas at an exhibition. He is quite a storyteller, it was like going back to my childhood...

Picked up a 2013 GT500 a while ago. Had a few Cobras before, but this car is really heads and shoulders above.

Shelby said it was his favorite car to date, also the last one he was ever involved with making. :(

good for you bro, thats a great car ..

Vendzilla 11-08-2013 04:00 PM

An amazing line of cars he built, he took everything to a new level that he did.

SilentKnight 11-08-2013 04:49 PM

I still see the occasional GT500 at local car shows with his distinctive autograph on the glove box.

And anything with the Roush logo draws me in like a magnet. :)

NewNick 11-08-2013 04:56 PM

Clearly a top guy in every respect.

RevSand 11-08-2013 07:37 PM

That sucks. My 1st car was a Mustang w/ a Shelby package. RIP!!
