Japanese market

Does anyone have any experience with Japanese customers, what kind of content sells for them, how to approach them, etc... ?

I'd give anything if they delivered sushi home in finland. I always gotta go to a crowded small joint to get some. Bastards.

We did a 900 program for the Japanese financial markets and it was a nightmare dealing with our partners there. They are major paranoid about every little detail and drive you batty. We dropped the whole progect out of frustration with them.

Its a very difficult market to sell to.

Yes, I was in Tokyo one time and it was uncomforable to say the least dealing with them.

We kept doing business with Japanese custiomers and are doing well, however we deal with Australians there now, not the Japs.

A friend of mine just came with the idea of a site in Japanese targeted exclusively to them, he knows something about the market, but I guess everyone not Japanese is lost when trying to understand them.

KRL 02-11-2003 07:25 AM

They trust no one. More so than any culture I've dealt with in business. The fucked part is they'll shake your hand, nod their heads a zillion times, say ok very good, and you think they are with the program when they really are not.

Funny thing is we had a white guy who understood Japanese perfectly come to the meeting without them realizing he was fluent and understanding everything they were saying in Japanese about us and the deal as we were going along.

Its a complete waste of time unless you have a Japanese partner or a person who understands the language and culture. If you have neither, then just stick with English projects.

:2 cents:

Thank you guys for the input. I will have a word with my partner about the project.

I am glad to know it is not just me who had this idea about the Japs.

Thanks :thumbsup

In America, if you agree to a deal, it means you'd better do it or I'll fucking sue ya, and that is understood by both parties. In Japan, if you agree to a deal they think it only means "we will do the best we can, and if we fail, too fucking bad."

I sell to the Japanese. Sadistic little bastards.
