Let's say for argument's sake that there are 60,000 new credit card signups a day (this was debated in a recent thread. that seems to be a fairly common middle ground guess).

You've got to figure 90% of our sales are men aged 18-50, right? That eliminates quite a lot of the world's population.

Then take out the people who don't even have computers. Hell, I heard that over 50% of the population in the world has never even made a telephone call. So don't give me any of that billions of potential customers...

60,000 signups a day for the last 7 years would mean we've gone through 150 million customers.

So by my calculations...the last customer will buy a membership on October 12th, 2004. There isn't much time, people...save your money.

The only problem is the number of start up sites that aim at the lowest common denominator. These guys will always suffer.

That's assuming each customer will be infinately happy with 1 billing period of 1 site.

Looking into the statistics of recurring memberships and memberships per capita would be more fruitful.

In recent research data, it was stated that approximately 15% of the 700 million Internet users have paid for online content. That would be about 100 million users in the pool.

You have to figure many guys buy multiple sites just like they would buy lots of different magazines at a newsstand.

There are many other ways to pick up the money besides with a credit card don't forget. Our investment group is going heavy into that direction right now, with prepaid, telephony and debit products.

Actually and sadly that's not accurate. Most people in the world do not have a phone line. Hard to believe but true.

There are only about 900 million phone lines worldwide. Only 31 million of those carry DSL by the way.

There are now more cell phones than land lines. Approaching 1.5 billion.
