Hawaii anyone?

Ever since watching Magnum PI as a kid I've always dreamed of living to Hawaii. I'm planning out my first vacation there later this year. When is the best time to go, and what are the best things to do other than the USS Arizona?

baddog 04-20-2012 11:44 AM

We have only been to Maui and Kauai. Motorcycles, helicopters and cameras are all you need.

David! 04-20-2012 11:47 AM

Great place to visit but prepare to have your wallet destroyed as everything touristy is very expensive :2 cents:

Theo 04-20-2012 11:48 AM

I'm going to Maui next week. Lloyd, any local restaurant to recommend?

DarkJedi 04-20-2012 11:52 AM

visit AMP?

sandman! 04-20-2012 11:59 AM

nice place very overpriced tho there are many places in the world just as nice for half the cost.

i did have a fun week there tho

Theo 04-20-2012 11:59 AM

AMP moved from there many years ago.

DarkJedi 04-20-2012 12:02 PM

where to?

why isn't he posting anymore?

JP-pornshooter 04-20-2012 12:41 PM

i just got back from Maui, Kannapali beach resort.
loved it.. first time in HI for me.
a coffee and a turkey sandwich was $12 at starbucks so yeah expensive.
but the locals do not think they are the 50th state, they claim there is only 49 legal states.

cybermike 04-20-2012 01:01 PM

There needs to be a convention over there so we can all write it off

JasonB 04-20-2012 01:12 PM

I bought on Maui in 2003. Amp used to be my neighbor.
There's not really a best time of year to visit, it's great all year long. Personally I'd skip Oahu, but if you've never been there, I guess you should go once. All the islands are nice, but my favorite is Maui. A million things to do. Snorkel, stand up paddle, outrigger paddle, surf, bike down the volcano, etc.
Theo, be sure to go to Mama's Fish House. It's amazing & by far the best restaurant on the island.

bronco67 04-20-2012 01:14 PM

I lived there from 88 to 92.

make sure you take a drive down the West Side highway, and see Makaha and Kaena Point.

To be honest, we were only there a few days. I remember we did a luau one night, it was cool. We sponsored a barbecue on a catamaran another night. I don't really remember any remarkable dining. I asked Tanya if anything stuck out in her memory and it was the Hawaiian Hot Dog, but that was Kauai.

Visit Obamas boyhood home?

DarkJedi 04-20-2012 02:57 PM

is it dangerous to surf there? sharks and stuff?

i know it's one of the best places in the world for surfing and i'd love to visit.

beta-tester 04-20-2012 03:12 PM

I went to the Big Island 2 years ago. It was a blast! The biggest island and a lot of stuff to do, be it surfing, hitchhiking, diving in in tropical rainforests, or simply swim or snorkel in a beautiful warm ocean.
I was in Kona and the weather was fantastic even in January. I'd avoid Hilo because the waves are higher there and it's mostly rainy due to its position on the other side of the island.

Personally I'd like to go to all of the islands in the future, particularly Maui and northern Oahu (i heard the beaches are stunning there). Very nice islands...

L-Pink 04-20-2012 03:30 PM

Hey man, I grew up on Oahu, spent a lot of time on Maui also. When you get close to going contact me and I can tell you some good places to visit. Restaurants change to much for me to help you but I can recommend good beaches, surf/body surfing areas and other geographic stuff.

TrashyContent 04-20-2012 03:31 PM

Hmmmm

Watch out for Dog The Bounty Hunter Brudha !

brassmonkey 04-20-2012 03:43 PM

hang loose luved it. when it rains there it rains hard. its a very long flight. you will love it make sure to go to a Luau. watch them put that pig in the ground :) and try the sweet bread, pineapple and the sugar factory is there.

L-Pink 04-20-2012 05:51 PM

There are some military bases you could get into that have great beaches and facilities also. Bellows AFB and Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station.

Man that sounds so amazing... I've never been anywhere close to there but we always talk about going. I know you said its good all year around, but is there a best time / worst time to go, weather wise?

Yes, go eat at Mala in Lahaina, excellent food on the water. I just got back from a week in Maui, you might still be able to see some whales as the whale season is ending right now. What part of the island will you be staying on?

RyuLion 04-20-2012 06:02 PM

I visit tons of Islands, beaches here in South FL Coast so don't need to go there..

Where did you buy at on Maui? Do you live there full time or is it just a vacation home? I agree with you, I've been to all the islands several times, but Maui is my favorite.

Chosen 04-20-2012 06:41 PM

Never been there...

Why? We both liked Kauai better.

Almost zero nightlife in Kauai, whereas Maui has Lahaina. I like getting out and hiking Kauai and exploring with less tourists, but being the rainiest island can dampen things. I also really enjoy the humpback whale season in Maui, Dec - April, which you don't find on the other islands.

BAKO 04-20-2012 07:09 PM

Been there more then a dozen times. I'm planning buying a property this year in Honolulu :-) Any season is good weather in Hawaii. All u need is your swimming shorts

Ah, well we would go off on an all day adventure that would not get us home until after 10, so never really thought about leaving the bars at the resort. Nice to be able to walk home. :)

livexxx 04-20-2012 07:51 PM

Maui is great, molokai was OK, but a bit too laid back TBH
Big Island was even better. The absolute summits and saddle road you are not supposed to go over in a hire car. But there is a place that does rentals to scientific staff. Just go there and get a 4x4 (pretend you have a telescope) and drive to the top of either summit. At night if you can handle the altitude it is life changing. I vote the big island for really amazing things, heli over volcano and driving in an open jeep around a sulphur field, LOL.
(well not the last one)

livexxx 04-20-2012 07:53 PM

Oahu has a good exotic hire company as well, back then anyway, had a viper for a couple of days and a lambo. Used to be able to swim with the fish at that bay that was like standing in a tropical tank but i heard they closed it. Submarine tours were good, really suprising because they were real submarines, LOL

rock-reed 04-20-2012 10:32 PM

Went to Honolulu and Maui.... Liked Honolulu, but Really liked Maui... laid back.... Listen to the fat guy signing Somewhere over the Rainbow... drink some cock tails... lay on the beach.

Summer is slightly hotter, just by a couple degrees, so I'd go in the Winter. Personally I'd go in Feb because that's when there's the best whale watching.

I bought in Wailea. It's our main home, but we have another place in Portland & go there sometimes for the summer.

garce 04-23-2012 02:02 PM

I live in Toronto. You all are talking about Hawaii. Now I'm even more depressed.

Argue about the nightlife! Argue about the weather! Argue about which perfect island is even more perfect than that other island that someone else said is perfect.

I live in Toronto. Now I'm even more depressed.

sojproductions 04-23-2012 02:03 PM

i tried wrestling the waves on north shore, needless to say, i got kicked to fuck

Bugbee 04-23-2012 02:30 PM

Maui by far is my favorite, so much to do. I love Kapalua that is my favorite spot in Maui. Lahaina is fun some good shopping and touristy restaurants etc.

Theo hit up Sansei Sushi in Kapalua for late night happy hour on a Friday or Saturday or even just for lunch or dinner.

aloha mf...

naughtylaura 04-23-2012 04:19 PM

Ive always wanted to go. May book a trip for later this year

Barefootsies 04-23-2012 04:22 PM

I am hoping to be able to go later this year myself.

I've wanted to go the past few, but the biggest issue has been the GF's vacation schedule. She only has a few weeks with her telco job. I would like to go a bit longer than a week if possible.

This year, we shall see. Hopefully her kids to do burn it up as in year's past.

I lived on Barber's Point for 3 years. I'll never forget the famous "Mother's Day Sells" at the beach. It was a call in sick day definitely. Those were great times.

I think they closed it down a few years ago.

Were you in the USCG? My father was, worked out of Aloha Tower and Sand Island.

navy.

I had a buddy in the Coast Guard, so he would get me into the bar on the base. For some reason there was a good supply of hot coast guard girls there.

Why you are there, please do the general population a favor and kick the shit out of that douche bag known as Dog the Bounty Hunter. Thanks.

Get scuba certified before you go. As beautiful as the islands are, the most beautiful and breathtaking parts are under the water.

If you end up in Kona, go on a night dive with Jack's Diving Locker and swim with the giant manta rays, it something you will never forget in your life.

Getting scuba certified before you go saves you from wasting your time and money while you're on vacation taking a sub-par resort course.
