Wal-Mart, Target volunteering to collect state sales taxes
Wal-Mart and Target are voluntarily going to start charging consumers their state's sales taxes on online sales at their web sites.
This could have some dramatic taxation implications for everyone else who doesn't collect state sales taxes. |
Yes, large brick and mortar companies trying to get the govt. to make all online transactions taxable. They're trying to get rid of one of the bigggest benifits of online shopping.
|
Could cause them some major problems if they're collecting taxes without the approval of the taxing authorities.
But then Walmart is in every state, so I guess they'd have the ability to do that.. Probably be some flack about it all before it's over.. |
The reason they have to collect state sales tax, arguably, is that they have a physical presence in each and every state. It's the reason why Dell collects sales tax when they sell to me in Michigan even though I'm buying from Texas... but Schmuck Computer, Inc. in Ohio doesn't charge sales tax.

In the news report I saw this on, it said they were worried, because they have retail locations that the states were going to attempt to hit them with years of back sales taxes since whenever they started selling online so they decided to take action ahead of any forced order and start collecting them now.
