only in mainstream can a company that makes jack shit in $$$ sell for that much.

wehateporn 04-09-2012 03:15 PM

If we consider from country to country, and think about who the word "SLAVE" most applies to in the world, it certainly won't be the guys working at home with porn.

smutnut 04-09-2012 03:20 PM

How many will now try to work on something like that in mainstream and end up working like slaves in office cubicles?

porno jew 04-09-2012 03:23 PM

the app market is exploding yes and it does make sense to build a business in an expanding field not one that is contracting, but it's not as easy as one thinks.

Garbage in...garbage out.

Few people do in this business on the webmaster side of things.

DWB 04-09-2012 06:10 PM

He's a slave too. He now has to turn around and pay an ungodly amount of tax to his masters.

mineistaken 04-09-2012 07:45 PM

tony286 04-09-2012 08:13 PM

if I knew how to program, I wouldn't be fucking around with adult. You are right apps give a programmer so much opportunity.

Brujah 04-09-2012 08:30 PM

How many apps are submitted to the appstore? The ones that are approved is a small percentage, and I think I read there are 600,000+ in the appstore so the odds of winning the acquisition lottery is 1:billions?

Shoplifter 04-09-2012 08:34 PM

I think instagram was almost starting to turn into a social network itself where people post their pictures on the instagram website and talk about them. FB might have been worried they are potential competition.

Worked out well for whoever provided VC.

Adam X 04-09-2012 10:39 PM

yeah FB was threatened with the social pic implications since they focus on pics so much.. and the comments, etc.. they wanted to gobble it.. just like barnato's sig. Props on that find mr B.

fuckin billion dollars for that app and its user base.. unreal..
the next gold mine could be windows phone apps.. theres adult apps there, unless they ban them like google did after apple.

Matt 26z 04-10-2012 01:28 AM

I'd rather look at nudie stuff all day long than spend the time minding to my billion dollars.

I think the lesson here is that you don't necessarily have to compete with the big boy's entire site. You "just" have to zero in on one aspect of their site and threaten their positive image in that area. In this case, Facebook apparently felt their album feature is inadequate and that Instagram could become a problem for them down the road.

Let's not forget that MySpace bought Photobucket for $250 Million. This really isn't any different than Facebook buying Instagram.

app market is big, you just need to find out what converts, and yes even stupid apps have their market, you would be surprised!

SomeCreep 04-10-2012 02:21 AM

People confuse working hard with working smart. If money is your goal, then working smart is what counts.

rowan 04-10-2012 03:12 AM

That "guy" didn't make a billion, he founded a company, which with several other people working with him, was sold for a billion.

It wasn't a one man band, and he didn't personally make $1b from it.

Ohhhh I'm so sure he only made out with a couple years salary. :1orglaugh It's a BILLION fucking dollars dude. (although the OP did say "guy" so meh..)

Mutt 04-10-2012 03:50 AM

like winning the lottery, there are tons of companies and individuals out there creating apps and i'm sure many are better than Instagram but Instagram took off and became a hit.

hundreds of billions of dollars have been lost investing in mainstream Internet, the most probably ever lost in online porn by one entity is a few hundred grand.

AdultCentro_Ian 04-10-2012 07:43 AM

with the success of Nokia Lumia phone windows apps could turn out to be lucrative venture...

TheDA 04-10-2012 07:45 AM

Not bad for the employees either $100,000,000 / 13 for a couple of years work :)

michael.kickass 04-10-2012 07:48 AM

Lucky bastard.

bronco67 04-10-2012 08:07 AM

I saw this thing on CNN about how the Lion King on Broadway reached a milestone of $850 million. This took them 15 years to reach that amount. I could care less about Broadway shows, but I'm aware of the artistry, sweat and crazy amount of work by hundreds of people that goes into presenting a giant show like the Lion King.

This guy writes some code and gets a billion. It's a warped world we live in.

cooldude7 04-10-2012 08:10 AM

hmmmm, accidental billionaire

Considering it doesn't even make money, it is a very warped world we live in.
