World Series of Poker 2012 Main Event

Anyone here ever play? I'm strongly considering it...

TrashyContent 04-08-2012 04:01 PM

Hmmm...

My mate qualified about 5 years ago via a pub league in the UK... he min cashed for about $20k if memory serves me right...

It's very hard as such a large field... even though the stucture is nice... I would never buy into it... but would try and qualify for it via saterlittes...

I know a friend of a friend who won year won two saterlittes, both times for a $100 entry ! Must be nice lol !

I know a guy that bought in for the 10k. got knocked out in something like 300-200 place... left with 47k or something along those lines.

kane 04-08-2012 11:20 PM

A guy a buddy of mine works with bought into it about 3 years ago. Had had always wanted to do it so he saved the money and took a vacation to go play. He survived the first day, but got knocked out the second so it was 10K down the drain.

He said the problem is that there are so many satellite winners that are there for free or next to nothing that they take crazy risks the first few days just trying to get lucky and accumulate a bunch of chips so it is very hard to read anyone.

sounds like if you'd play super tight those first couple of days you'd survive

would be good fun, but ive no patience, id be the one who blows it all in day 1.

Before the government shut down PokerStars I would try and qualify through their satellites. They were as low as $1 to get in. So yeah, some crazy risk takers were definitely making their way to Vegas. Makes me wonder what the impact of the shutdown in the US means for the WSOP and the top money.

I played in a few online championships. The most I ever walked away with was 16k. My best advice is patience, patience, and then more patience.

after moneymaker won the fields started going from hundreds to thousands... reduced the skill involved. wouldn't play in it if i had bought in, would rather play stud or omaha for the bracelet rather than chasing the jackpot

Even playing tight with nuts is tough because you are afraid of blinding out. One advantage to such a major tournament like that is the blinds raise pretty slow. Local tournaments with nuts and fast blinds are too often a crap shoot.

Oh well, it's part of the game. Personally I like cash games better because everyone has their shirt in the game.

that's the case for most tournaments, but in this one the blinds go up kinda fast to avoid too much action. Even the tightest of tight need to take a few hands to keep afloat, but when you make your first move in 2 hours and some 21 year old jackass calls you with nothing because he feels the 'itch' then it makes your chances quite small. it's become a bingo game unfortunately. Satellites need to stop for the main event, and min buy in needs to go up. it's been the same for like 40 years...

Chris/makefuckingmoney, Slavik and RichC

I always thought it would be more fun to play in 6 or 7 of the $1500 events for the $10k and if you won enough money you could decide whether to play the main event or not.

Yeah, he was saying if he had to to do over he would play a lot tighter and only play the best hands he was dealt for the first few days until most of the crazy people were gone.

That hand 88 vs AT,wasnt called "Bad beat" ,Player with pocket 88s was just unlucky, preflop its flip coin,he was small favourite maybe 56%-44% to win that hand.
Bad beat is str8 flush vs stronger str8flush ,quads vs quads etc :pimp

That's not a bad beat. The guy had what, 7 outs on the river?

I haven't heard anyone with a worse bad beat than mine.

Get dealt AA. Raise the pot in mid position. BB raises me. I flat call. Flop comes ATT. I check. He bets. I make a small raise. He shoves. I instacall. He shows 88. Turn? An 8. River? The other 8.

I didn't play online for a LONG time after that BS.

That's awful. Take solace in the fact that 99 times out of 100, maybe even more, you would have raped that player for his stack.

A lot easier to say when you aren't sitting there fuming!
