media player crashing

why does my windows media player always crash when i try to play something thats on the web? theres a movie embedded in a thread, and it kills IE... if i try & open a url to a mpeg or mov or whatever... WMP dies... ive upgraded, ive got patches, i got everything...

anyone have this problem?

Yep, I just had the same thing with that thread on here with the video embedded in it. Crashed my IE twice so I said fuck it.

A few possible causes..

1) You dont have the right codecs installed to view the movies (not likely because it tries to download the right ones.. but it doesn't always find them)
2) Have you tried saving them to your hard drive first and then playing them? Does it only happen when you try to play it over the net or does it not work at all?
3) What version of mediaplayer is it? There are heaps of alternative movie viewing apps, just search google for a mpeg player, also I'm pretty certain that WMP isnt capable of playing .mov files they're specifically for Quicktime

Hope that helps..

9.0, upgraded from 7 today and still have the problem.

doesnt matter what format. if its over the web, it most likely wont play

I have the *exact* same problem when I upgraded to 9.
It takes about a full minute for each vid to load when I'm playing it off the net.
Locally they're fine.

I wish I could go back to version 8 but it wont let me :feels-hot

if you have video editing software installed, specially programs for sonic foundry it messes up embeded videos when you try to view them.

Search to find 2 files called mcdsmpeg.ax and mcspmpeg.ax then change them to mcdsmpeg.old and mcspmpeg.old.

That is what my problem was.
