"A One-Time Message Is not SPAM"

A couple of days ago I recieved some SPAM in my university webmail account. I hate it when the university sells your email addy. *grumble*

I wrote a reply to the company, asking them to remove me from the mailing list, and informing them tht I would save the email in case I needed it to show that I'd been spammed. I wasn't happy at all, needless to say, and let the offender know this, albeit politely.

I recieved a reply a few minutes ago. One line.

"A one-time message is not considered spam."

I'm wondering if I should point them to some nifty threads here.

This is a good question. I'd love to hear some debate.

I think the folks in the House of Representatives and Congress are just that - "Old folks" who don't even begin to understand the Internet.

A quick search under Spam laws lead me to http://www.spamlaws.com/us.html which gives a lot of conflicting information.

Our Lightspeed Media addresses get a ton of spam and virus crap. I think it's funny when an adult webmaster gets spam email. I got one today and decided to play around with their remove link; Any email address I put in returned "your email address will be removed" which means it's pretty much bullshit.

IMHO, ANY unsolicited email is spam. Whether it be a one-time thing or a plethora of shit stuffed in someone's mailbox, it's spam. Same as with junkmail. Even one advertisement that you didn't ask for goes in the garbage can.:2 cents:

So how does one contact you about a business deal if you consider everything spam?

Unsolicited email is spam. That's what the laws about spam are about. Obviously, it isn't always illegal... but if it is unwanted email, especially mass-email, I think it is (and should be) covered. Spam isn't just getting email from someone after you ask them not to.

Okay, let me clarify:
Any unsolicited ADVERTISEMENT emails are what I consider to be spam. Sorry about not making that clearer.
