i know but i won't tell

The best is Raven Tools, starts at $99 per month.

SEO Powersuite is software and comes in for a mention.

Market Samurai will be good as soon as the new Authority Labs powered rank tracking is made available, will be cheaper than Authority Labs direct. It's still the best keyword research tool there is.

No, it's not, not even close. Being slow as fuck aside, it no longer pulls competition data from Google, it pulls it from Bing. Which is about as useful as drinking vodka to sober up.

I've been looking at seo power-suite for a few months with an eye to using it on a mainstream project and judging my their forums, the software has issues because of limitations imposed by google. loads of complaints within their forums and the general answer from the guys that develop the software seems to be; "buy our proxy service".

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the situation but when trying to use the software myself, google kept blocking me even for looking up as little as 10 keywords.

This is the same with all user run software which accesses Google's data. Google has tightened up how much data you can pull directly from it. Market Samura, SEO Power Suite, etc were all affected.

As DamageX stated above, competition data for Market Samurai now comes from Bing. I don't see that as as big a problem as people have made out it is, after all the SEOC metric is only meant to give you a representative guide, it was never definitive even from Google.

Products like Raven Tools and SEOMoz are excellent, however they come at a cost, both starting at around $100 a month.

I use Raven Tools and Market Samurai.

Seems like Bing traffic is getting a little better, hell I saw a movie last weekend and they had a bunch of Bing advertisements play before it started.

So would you advise buying seo powersuite at this juncture? If yes, would you recommend using it with a list of proxies? At this stage, Raven Tools would be an expense I could do without seeing is how my mainstream project still hasn't kicked off and I am budgeting everything to keep a firmer grip on ROI going forward. The approach for me would be to outright buy instead of lease.

Your thoughts?

Personally I'd be using Market Samurai unless there are specific features of SEO Powersuite that appeal to you. That said SEO Powersuite is a good product however unless they develop relationships with providers of data, like Market Samurai is about to implement for rank tracking, you always run the risk that you'll wake up one day it it wont work.

People criticised both SEO Powersuite and Market Samurai for the loss of functionality after Google tightened the noose, I think Market Samurai is dealing with the new playing field better.

No matter what you use, there is always a risk that a change by Google can restrict the amount and quality of data you can source from them.

Thanks for the explanations, it is very appreciated. I guess I now have to find out the direction the Seo Powersuite guys are moving in to see which software I am better off with.

I like the ease of use of SPS, and the modules like rank tracker and seo spyglass. A shame if I can't use this software package coz it does seem very well thought out.

SEO Powersuite is well thought out, it's robust software. If they are going to start sourcing rank data from Authority Labs, and provide some kind of proxy solution for other functionality then I'd probably be inclined to stick with it.

On the other hand, there will likely come a day when the only alternative is to use a solution like SEOMOZ or Raven Tools.

In my opinion the best combination of both is Raven Tools and Market Samurai.

Precisely. Although it wasn't only Market Samurai, it also affected SEO Powersuite and some other similar tools.

This is the issue with user gathered data, you are always reliant on the source of the data not changing the rules on how much or the quality of data you can receive.

If Google decided tomorrow to shut off 3rd party usage of it's data then every tool would be dead in the water, if Google further restricts it but does not shut it off then tools relying on user gathered data will be affected.
