U.S. pays $860,000 to families of Afghan shooting victims
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- The United States gave $860,000 to the families of people in Afghanistan killed or wounded in a shooting rampage that is being blamed on U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, two Afghan officials said Sunday.
The money includes $50,000 for each of 16 people who were killed, as well as $10,000 for each of six who was injured, the provincial council members said. A U.S. official confirmed Sunday that a payment had been made on Saturday. http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/25/world/...dmn_topstories http://www.asiaone.com/A1MEDIA/news/...afp_afghan.jpg |
I wonder if the value of a life goes up depending on nationality....
If they had been Chinese for instance would they be worth less or more? |

Meanwhile on the front page of CNN.com today they had a story about a guy who spent 18 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, was released and got a whopping $2,500 upon his release, which was actually money he earned working at his job in the prison or that was sent to him by other people.
I'm not saying the Afghan families don't deserve something, but it makes me wonder when we don't hesitate to compensate them, but balk a compensating an american who was wrongly accused and convicted of a crime. |
