Quick question - has anyone experienced noticeable CPU performance issues while on the site? Someone told me it was taking up a big chunk of processing power... which I guess would make sense on a slower computer, considering it is high res video and a separate audio track playing in-browser at the same time.

Wonder if anyone else has noticed that.

I've had this idea for over five years, but in the time it took me to finally shoot the video and put this thing together, at least one very similar site beat me to the punch: RainyMoods.com

His site has already gone viral, has tens of thousands of social media shares, and is in the top 40k of Alexa sites. So I'm a tiny bit late to the game ;) but I'm also doing things a little bit differently and have plans to add a few more features that I think will set my site apart. Hopefully there's room on the Internet for two virtual rain sites!

Well looks like you know what you are doing and you do not need any suggestions so I hope you will not be offended.
Personally I would lock the page after minute or two with pop up window that will only allow people to continue use after joining (facebook page, app, twitter, email). Especially joining with app able to force share likes might make this go viral like rocket. Well again, according to your join date and number of posts you know how to play this game :))

I appreciate the suggestion, and I've actually got something kind of along those lines in the pipeline!

Shared it on my wall to help the snowball get rolling. Viral effect is amazing, experienced it few days ago on pinterest with one picture, you just need one person with lot friends and your done.

It looks really nice. You asked about performance and my internet connection here is just 768k and it loads fine for the most part but the video buffers regularly. The good thing is that the audio doesn't cut out for me when the video does and the video doesn't go black when buffering :)

BTW, maybe add a Twitter to it to get more social views

Really? These ambient noise things are all over the app market. Gotta admit though I haven't really seen any sites doing it. So you may have a point.

OP needs to incorporate all the other noises people want to hear before someone takes the idea and builds upon it.

Sounds better than rainy mood, more realistic.

Could listen to it all day.

As already mentioned, you should build on it with more sounds of nature.

Great idea, I live in a rain forrest though, maybe make one of the sun too?

It does take up a bit of cpu resources on older processors without gpu acceleration due to the use of flash. It would be great if you had a "low res" version which did not use as much resources. You might even be able to find a way to do it without flash.

Server went down for a few minutes, luckily they got it back up and running pretty quickly.

Thanks for the input, signupdamnit. There is, in theory, a low-res version of the video which should play when it detects a slow connection, but it doesn't compensate for slow computer speed. Also, both the audio and video are (in theory) smart enough to detect when Flash is not present and play via html5 version instead.

Anyone try it on an iPad? I don't have one so haven't been able to test that out.
