Let me just take a wild guess, your server provider was 99,9% up, and still cheapest in the business, now how can that be? There is your answer, as simple as that.

It was all about extremely fast server providers, and this kind of hosting was much more expensive, That difference in high-bandwidth processing made all the difference between successful 200K+ TGP's and stuck at 10-20K TGP's.

No, in 2000 the secret was keep your galleries fresh and your link trades fed and you made money.

Today the secret is: don't start one.

I'm not talking about internet starving for pics years, like 1995-2000.
I'm talking about after year 2000 "TGP boom" with much competition and high traffic.
