I'm off to the DR soon for a fast get away. Any suggestions of what to do or not to do while visiting? Hahahah

Try going to Casa De Campos or Punta Cana. Two good spots. If you end up in Santo Domingo check out "los tres ojos" which are these funky pools in an underground cave. Speaking of caves there is an awesome restaurant called "la cava" that is deep inside a cave. Finally go catch a baseball game. The games down there are nuts with merengue bands and cheerleaders. Expect to drink a lot. :thumbsup

Don't rent a car. The roads/drivers there are fucking insane. I don't think they have any rules at all... :1orglaugh

Dont:

1) Drink Brugal if you don't want to get falling down drunk
2) Pick up hookers in the tourist areas. (overpriced and butt-ugly) Go to the nicer clubs where the locals go.
3) get in a taxi without asking how much the ride is first
4) ever forget that you are in a foreign country
5) Use drugs, buy drugs or ask about them in tourist areas - locals love to set you up for a shakedown.

Do:

1) Try the local "presidente" beer, it's great
2) Sample the local generic Cialis "la pela" for 1:50 a pill
3) Check out Cabarete, nice little surfing town on the North Coast
4) Stock up on cigars and rum to take home with you

What are some legit stores selling name brand Dominican cigars? Are there any chains that might be located throughout the country?

I am not a cigar aficionado myself, but I generally find E. Leon Jimenez cigars to be pretty good for my occasional ashtray-mouth adventures.

You don't need to worry much about getting ripped off with "fake" cigars down there, just be careful you don't inadvertently buy Cuban cigars that will get you in trouble with customs if/when you go back to the US. (assuming that's your origin)

Just remember that most things cost 2.5 to 3 times their value elsewhere when you are in a tourist area. If you are in Santo Domingo or any other major town grocery stores are not going to rip you off much.

yeah and the girls here drive automatics with 2 feet, fred flintstone style. wouldn't dare let them near a clutch or a street with actual traffic. i tried to em give a few lessons:

Punta cana and playa dorada are great, was at santiago for a few hours visited a cigar factory :D

Easy entertainment to be had just don't wander off in to the "ghetto" places stay where the tourists are or in the bigger cities and you will be fine...

If you can go to "bacardi island" its called sosauna or something like that. Its paradise on earth they shot the bacardi advert there its a lonely island but the scenery is the best I have ever seen anywhere....
