Why are people addicted to donut shops?

We have a Dunkin Donuts up the street and I swear, like clockwork, day or night you see the same people there at their specific routine times. Its the weirdest thing.

And the lines at this one in the morning are usually 20 deep. Anywhere else, people would be bitching and moaning, but in their quest for their donut fix they stay civilized. No pushing or shoving. Everyone cordial and friendly just focused intensely on the donuts.

So why are people so behaviorally addicted to the routine of going to donut shops?

I do it too and can't figure out why so many of us share this insatiable desire. And it goes beyond just the food craving. I really think its more than that.

Any insight on this? :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

CrazyNakedChick 02-08-2003 09:52 AM

Those damn krispy kremes...

I wish I would have gotten a franschise.

I think they may outsell porn.

Socks 02-08-2003 09:56 AM

I think people are addicted to their habits more than they are the actual donuts.

They just bought out a local bread chain, Montana Mills. They've got some plan for a big bakery type chain, with the breads and the donuts and the coffee. These breads are better than the donuts, for me at least. And I love those donuts.

We don't have Krispy Kreme's here in Boston and I'm fucking dying to try one.

Yeh, that's my point exactly. Its like a 2nd home for some of these people. I see the same faces at the same tables with the same donuts reading the same newspaper at the same time.

It really is a bizarre habit when you really start to think about it.

In fact a couple weeks ago, a lady who is a regular there got miffed when someone was sitting down where she usually sits. She said to the guy, "That's our table, can you sit somewhere else." like she owned it. Really strange stuff going on.

Krispy Kremes are completely different from Dunkins. A whole different sensation. Can't really explain it, but when you eat one you'll know.

They usually are way fresher and have that just out of the oven softness.

I like them, but still think Dunkin Donuts are better and they are bigger also. But many people swear by their Krispy Kremes as being the best.

gothweb 02-08-2003 10:13 AM

Thanks for reminding me. :( The donuts they have here just don't compare. I miss having Dunkin Donuts all over the place.

No franchises currently available in the U.S. which is kinda strange..
There are tons of places that need these shops..

When they built the first few franchises...
People LINED up outside the shop.
Before it opened!!!

I'm sure they have quite literally caused heart-attacks. Each glazed donut is like 600 calories, and you eat 3 before you have even had a chance to think about it.

Yep. Been here for a few years, came for University... But I grew up in the States. I remember driving from my home in New Hampshire, down to Boston. On the way down, the weekend there, and the trip back, I counted about 30 different Dunkin Donuts. I love that.

It's amazing how many people eat junk food and no surprise why so many are overweight.

I guess with people being busy they love fast food.

I noticed this when I traveled a couple of months ago with some friends. Everybody wanted to stop at a dougnut shop and starbucks for junkfood and coffee for breakfast.

I would be doing it as well if I had learned the hard way about feeling good and losing excess weight. Now I just pig out on sundays and eat cleanly the rest of the week, because I am weak. I can't stop at just one doughnut for example I will eat a dozen in one sitting!

LOL You just brought back a memory I had when I was pregnant.
My bestfriend used to work at a donut store and she used to always bring me my fav donuts. Well, one time I went to meet her at work and she handed me a box of donuts,we started walking home and I accidentally dropped the box :( The donuts went all over the street.
I was fat and pregnant LOL I started to cry! "My donuts are all over the street"!!!

It's funny now but it wasn't funny then :)

Just had to add this into this thread :thumbsup

Whoo Hoo!

Krispy Kreme announces expansion in Quebec! February 6, we announced plans for the first store opening in Quebec and are targeting April 29 as the opening date. At 5:30 a.m., the doors will open and customers will be treated to Krispy Kreme's signature Hot Original Glazed doughnuts at Marché Central in Montreal. With this opening, the company celebrates its first Canadian store outside of Ontario, and its fifth in Canada.

Nice... I read about this, but I didn't know the date.

Marche Central is less than a 5 min walk from my girlfriend's house :)

I can't fucking wait!

Any Dunkin Donuts that I've been to has tiny little donuts and they usually don't taste so good either.
But Timmies well... thats just another story :Graucho

G Sharp 02-08-2003 01:44 PM

Krispy Kreme has the same, if not more intense, level of devotion from its patrons. It's amazing--when a KK opened in the SF Valley, there were traffic jams to the drive through for at least 6 months after the store opened.

KK is okay...its tasted best if freshly baked. Other than that, its just a regular donut.

Krispy Kreme opened store here in Windsor few months ago, and some losers waited hours in line for doughnuts(first day). And their coffee tastes like shit.
