Dumb teen texts: 'Driving and facebooking is not safe!' - and then dies in crash

You can't make this shit up:

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/466270.../#.T1XdQflBdbw

"Sauer was making a late-night, four-hour drive from the Utah State University campus in Logan to visit her folks in Caldwell, Idaho. She passed the time along I-84 messaging a pal on Facebook about the Denver Broncos football team. But she stopped short, writing in her final missive, "I can't discuss this now. Driving and facebooking is not safe! Haha."

Moments later, Sauer, going more than 80 mph, slammed into a tanker truck that was slowly creeping up a hill at 15 mph. She was killed instantly; investigators saw no signs that she applied the brakes before the fatal crash. And in checking her cell phone records, they learned Sauer was posting about every 90 seconds during her drive."

Jesus, instant death, she didt know what happened

epitome 03-06-2012 03:04 AM

Dumb to do, yes, but this seemed like an otherwise bright girl. Sadly, teens text and drive. Hell, too many people of all ages text and drive.

Quote:

Taylor Sauer's future seemed a sky-is-the-limit proposition: She graduated high school last year with a sparkling 3.9 grade point average, was class salutatorian, played first base on her softball team and was active in community charities. After she was named a National Merit Scholar, she told a local TV station, "I want to go even further and take on the world."

Mr Pheer 03-06-2012 03:09 AM

Somewhere, someone is wondering why she didnt reply.

adendreams 03-06-2012 03:53 AM

I know a 19 year old model who told me "I have crashed my car 3 times, each time because I was texting" and yet she still does it. Cell phones are like crack pipes to these girls, they can't put em down.

Jman 03-06-2012 04:44 AM

Sad to say but my domain text-additcs.com is growing in value. About time I try to put up a page.

Maybe a Text Rehab center would be interested.

She should have just had some vodka while she was driving, she would have probably done better.

PR_Glen 03-06-2012 07:07 AM

it's even more irresponsible and dangerous than drunk driving, the laws surrounding it are either non-existent or the equivalent of a parking ticket..

they are only now just figuring this out what was obvious years ago.

alextokyo 03-06-2012 07:23 AM

Guess the race.

And gender.

To be fair though, I've had a good 3 or 4 low speed close calls because I was looking at girls instead of watching the road. :(

asdasd 03-06-2012 07:28 AM

Cars are rudimentary time travel machines, true story.

L-Pink 03-06-2012 08:01 AM

I think the problem is genetic. Next time you are driving count the number of women WITHOUT a cell phone in their hands.

SlammedMedia 03-06-2012 08:09 AM

I'd say the accident had absolutely nothing to do with texting.

Spot the mobile device.

blackmonsters 03-06-2012 08:29 AM

It's not funny because these "texters" are killing other people in their crashes.

Agreed.

I hope the poor tanker truck is OK.

Thats really pretty stupid to not realise the extreme danger of trying to text while driving. Maybe she had a bright future.. but.. not too very it's sad to say.

Really? So what would you say caused her to slam into a giant tanker truck going 80 mph without touching her brakes? Tinted windows? We all know speeding kills more people at the end of the day, but at least they tend to hit their breaks.

alias 03-06-2012 08:46 AM

Not surprised she didn't see it if her eyes were not properly adjusted to the driving conditions because of looking at the bright backlit lcd mobile display.

L-Pink 03-06-2012 09:11 AM

At 80 mph you cover the length of a football field, 360 ft, in 3 seconds. When does taking your eyes off the road for texting even start to make sense?

You don't start taking on the world, arse end of a tanker first. Not that bright!

stephane76 03-06-2012 09:23 AM

they should ban ALL cell phone use while driving.
European Countries have been doing it for YEARS.

I see drivers doing stupid things on the Road almost every day, 90% of the time, they are talking on their phone.

Hell, yesterday i saw a fatty on the highway on her cell... with her other hand; she was holding the steering wheel AND an Ice Cream, she was all over the place :helpme

Wow, that's really sad to read.

Like others have said, we should start adopting more driving rules from the Europeans. I watched a documentary once on Euro drivers and the Auto Bahn and how it's pretty safe because people follow the rules of the road and aren't distracted.

Euros don't listen to music, talk on their phone and drink their Starbucks when driving. They drive. They use the LH lane to pass then move over.

If American drivers learned nothing else from the Europeans than just that alone, the number of traffic accidents over here would drop by 60% or more.

PornMD 03-06-2012 02:28 PM

Texting is absolutely awful, but there's an underlying problem of people multitasking when driving. Texting is just taking the place of people doing makeup, shaving etc. I'm sure even GPS has led to accidents with people looking over at the maps vs. at the road.

You have to be a complete fucking moron though to text while doing 80. You're just asking for a mistake that you can't take back.

MichaelP 03-06-2012 02:50 PM

Been hit hard last year by a stupid teen texting while driving. Beside her, we were 5 cars involved... She walked away smiling, the poor one behind me (direct impact) left by ambulance with neck support... :(

Tom_PM 03-06-2012 03:05 PM

I'll never forget working in a strip mall and hearing sirens, watching out the window towards the intersection at the entrance/exit to the parking lot. A van pulled out to turn left directly in front of the ambulance and the kid was killed. He was blasting music so loud he didnt know there was a siren wailing towards the intersection. Add in eating, texting, talking and who knows what else. Bad ideas in vehicles.

Rochard 03-06-2012 03:14 PM

Eighteen years old.... I'd hit it.

I walk my dog for about an hour every day. When I happen to look in a car going by, half the time someone is looking at their phone. It's a lot of people who are not looking at the road -- and it almost ALWAYS women. Girls can't stay off their damn phone for a second. My wife and I were in her friend's Suburban, and she spent the first minute of the ride sending text messages. I told her if she was going to do that, then pull the fuck over right now and let us out. There was a serious argument that ruined our day, but she put the phone away.

I think all of our chances of being killed by a distracted idiot has seriously gone up since cell phones came out. Car makers should have some kind of tech that inhibits text messaging in phones while the car is in motion. Sounds far fetched, but it would probably be the only thing to stop these fucking morons from killing the rest of us.

At least some of these accidents don't hurt others. Last year, Dr. Frank Ryan was texting while driving and drove off a cliff, only killing himself. The dog survived. :thumbsup

Celebrity plastic surgeon apparently tweeted minutes before deadly crash

DamianJ 03-06-2012 03:44 PM

I feel really sorry for the truck driver.

CYF 03-06-2012 04:37 PM

she should have followed her own advice:

"And in checking her cell phone records, they learned Sauer was posting about every 90 seconds during her drive."

Another Facebook success story.

biskoppen 03-06-2012 04:39 PM

Texting while driving is just insane

Jakez 03-06-2012 04:47 PM

I text while driving all the time and have yet to kill anyone. Just a handful of fender benders and a couple totaled cars. No injuries though. :2 cents:

Socks 03-06-2012 09:33 PM
