Welcome to the dark side. :thumbsup

You should be able to configure 'doze to offer updates for you, and optionally let you choose which updates you want to apply, rather than automatically and quietly installing them. That's how I do it.

try linux mint it's based on ubuntu but it's a bit user friendly and working better in general. KDE if you want more windows like or GNOME 3 it's rocking now. I installed it about year or year an a half on my netbook and since then i have changed OS to mint on all my computers, but i still have win for gaming on destkop :D

Awesome man stick too it. We more linux pepes.

You probably agreed to all sorts of conditions when you installed Windows in the first place. We don't really own our copies of Windows, we just license them. Good luck with Linux, I think they update that OS about a hundred times more often than Windows.

Dual-boot Ubuntu / Windows 7 here. :)

The other day I had a problem with Linux RAID. A few hours later I got a solution from the guy who wrote it. Try that with Windows. See if the head guy at any MS division personally solves your problem, sending you updated code.
|
Is it really that irritating to you? Win7 works flawlessly for me. I've never had anything malicious or harmful installed because of a windows security update. Sounds like you are just being paranoid.
|
Think Windows is bad, wait until you run into a bump with Linux. I love both Windows and OS X.
Yeah yeah, OS X is a cousin of Linux or however you want to spin it. I still say fuck Linux. Freeware command line hippy open source free Linux bullshit, just trying to get a printer to work feels you're back in the 60's programming Apollo 11 to land on the moon. :1orglaugh |

thank you all for the suggestions people, looks like i will go with linux mint for the start, if three people can work with that, i have to too! :) and actually i have been a bit drunk from yesterday when writing this thread :1orglaugh

Linux Mint is great, then run Windows 7 inside VirtualBox. Makes it easy to rollback or delete your Windows regularly once it becomes infected with viruses/malware etc. Keep your files on a separate SAN/NAS and keep them safe :)

Pretty clear cut case of PEBCAK.

those are all common services that windows vista/7/8 use...
It has nothing to do with updates. They come and go as they please when the system needs them. |
Why are you installing linux because of stuff the computer is supposed to do? If you get frustrated easily with tech issues then linux will undoubtedly cause some ire over time. Don't worry about it. There is no perfect operating system. It's just indexing your pics, videos and music for you so you can connect to the collection from any computer in the house, disable search indexing, automatic updates, media indexing and turn off homegroup if it scares you. All options available in the control panel.

I just started messing with Crunchbang Linux and loving it as much as Arch
