The Monkees were funny and cute, and had some great pop songwriters crafting songs for them:

RIP Davey Jones...

Damn, enjoyed them growing up. RIP

Far-L 02-29-2012 12:46 PM

Necessary to post again in honor of Davey and the Monkees... And who would've thought they could be so damn psychedelic...

L-Pink 02-29-2012 12:46 PM

I'll always remember my mother commenting on the difference between my sister and I as kids.

Walk into my room and there's a Black Sabbath poster on the wall and I'm listening to "paint it black" walk into my sisters room and she has Monkey posters and she's listening to "I want to hold your hand.

.

RIP. A pop icon from my childhood. Even as a 5 yr old kid I knew they weren't really playing those instruments, but you always knew Davey was really singing.

They were actually very accomplished musicians and fought for the right to do their own musical production. Dolenz was really the key voice in the band though.

Tom_PM 02-29-2012 01:08 PM

I don't doubt it, but on that kids tv show they would just act it out in a pretty silly fashion.

DVTimes 02-29-2012 01:10 PM

I just found he was from the uk.

he was the best one too.

i should have guesed he was from the uk being so cool.

Mutt 02-29-2012 01:24 PM

damn, the Monkees were the first band i knew about, i loved them. the first record i ever bought was Daydream Believer, my mom had taken me to the doctor for shots and rewarded me by taking me to the music store, the owner was a middle aged man, my problem was i was only 4 or 5 and had no idea what the name of the song was, i told him Sleepy Jean, he looked and couldn't find it - so then he asked me to sing it, oh jeeze, i was shy, but i sang the 'cheer up sleepy jean' part for him.

they were a very interesting little part of rock n' roll history - a band cast for a kids tv show with the best pop/rock songwriters of the era writing songs for them. they grew into a real band, sorta, but nobody took them seriously.

the songs have lasted, they have far more songs that are still played than real rock bands who were pretty big in their era.

ah man, that's sad, that Davey Jones is dead and he was 66! fuck i'm getting old.

this song is their best

You will find a few well known names in the USA that you might not know came from the UK unless someone told you such as Bob Hope ...and even Jerry Springer !:1orglaugh

A few of my favorite Monkee's tunes:

I liked the dirty sound on the guitar on Valleri, so I tried to distort my amp the same way (lol, I was like 12 years old):

Obscure anti-war song...

I grew up watching them as well. Funny thing is I played them for my son on day when he was about 3 and every since they have been his favorite music.

Sad to lose a singer like that.

Paul Markham 02-29-2012 03:31 PM

Part of my Teens. The whole package was so well tuned.

Strange times for music in the mid 60s, everything from Sinatra to Dylan and Hendrix.

ajrocks 02-29-2012 07:02 PM

Fuck, where is Axel Rose going to steal his moves from now?
