He was just playing down to his base with that quote. The far right wing generally can't afford to send their kids to college. Rural areas also have very poor school systems (just as bad or worse than inner city education, minus the violence). So there's this culture that education just doesn't matter. There are a few outliers, but not many.

A lot of this actually comes down to the low property taxes in Republican strongholds. That's how they want it, but a consequence is that their local public school system is underfunded. As long as their kids can get into the military and drive a truck afterwards, all is well. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it explains why they don't value education.

Plus I'm sure Obama said he wants everyone to have the OPPORTUNITY to go to college.

I disagree. I think Rick Santorum actually believes in the things he says and is as, or more so batshit crazy then he seems.

I feel pretty confident I'm not swinging anyone his way. The dude couldn't even win reelection in PA for the senate. He also has some very odd practices when dealing with his deceased children.

Do I mind mocking him here? No. Do I think the 'attention' i'm giving him will win him any more votes? No.
