Steps for Blog Keyword Success

Is there a specific method/steps and/or tools used to or taken when trying to develop a successful blog? I am doing okay with things but I feel I could be doing much better if I took a different approach. Should I be doing keyword research for every post? What tools should be used and how many words per post make the most sense for SEO? Any advice would be appreciated. Here is what I am doing now:

Choose niche. Find a good domain. Find good sponsors. Write what makes sense. Submit to directories.

I'm missing a big SEO research factor I am assuming. Anyone have a method they are willing to share? :)

Build quality feeders and feed those with relevant backlinks + relevant backlinks + relevant backlinks + relevant backlinks + relevant backlinks + relevant backlinks + relevant backlinks.

word, but he said 'keyword success' and talking about keyword research for every post & words per post... all of which is counter intuitive IMO.

just blog until you vomit and (unless you're typing absolute randomness) the keywords will fall into place

Just use the keyword phrases you would use if you wanted to Google something. If you do not know what keywords you would use, you should probably pick a topic you are familiar with.

I do keyword research and then target my main keywords and long tails in the posts around the main ones. Why I do the research is mainly cause of the domain. I like to get the main keyword(s) in the domain. After that you just stay on topic with your blogging and the long tails etc will come. All in-link anchors get variations of the main keywords though.

I'm thinking about doing some internal post linking as well to other posts I am doing within the same blogs. I do nothing of this sort as of now.

For those of you that don't submit to directories for links, what do you recommend instead????

This is exactly what I do...I just think of things I would search for or what best describes what I'm promoting...it's been working great. Every now and then I will get a crappy keyword though, but that's life.
