That at least one undeniable example where the porn industry lead,
there are are many other that are not as clear cut (porn going one way, and the entire industry going the other) but there are other example where porn went there first.

Porn is most certainly not leading the way on the internet anymore. That hasn't been true for quite a long time.
Then again, a good chunk of internet companies have lost their innovation. Now almost everything is the ______ of _______. The Kickstarter of Porn, the Airbnb for cars, etc. Innovation just isn't that widespread anymore. Has anyone realized that porn doesn't innovate anymore because of piracy? Why would you invest in something new and unique when it can be stolen within 5 minutes. That's why porn is so cookie cutter now.
Look at China, they have a billion people, they are cranking out educated people, have tons of high tech factories, yet nothing innovative is coming out of China. It's because there is no incentive to do so. All your products and ideas will just be stolen instantly.
So while people bitch about intellectual laws preventing some innovation, it's the lack of intellectual property laws that really stop innovation.
But overall, the internet has sort of boomed already and in some ways is actually going backwards. I mean, people think pinterest.com is some exciting new thing. It's just some junk website. There is no new technology being invented, it's all just garbage websites with buzz words like "social" this or that. The internet is sort of like the power grid now, it's there you can use it, it will slowly improve, but the major advances are pretty much done. It will just slowly get better.
