Favorite Photoshop Plugins?

i'm window shopping right now for Photoshop/Illustrator plugins. I'm drooling, some of this shit looks excellent. I use NO plugins now.

http://www.autofx.com/ <-------- a few of these look great, the gel one, the crease one, and the focus one especially

yes i know you can do anything a filter/plugin can do using the existing Photoshop tools but preset plugin effects can make you way more productive.

So post your favorite plugins for Photoshop or Illustrator. Flash too but since I can barely use Flash ain't gonna be on my shopping list.

MonkeyMan 02-07-2003 12:23 AM

flamingpear.com will get you most of those. When I have a minute, I'll see if I can't find the sites that gave me the others...

Depending on what you mean by "3D", you can probably just use the Bevel and Emboss feature in Photoshop.

yeah, I use that already
im looking for something that can do this. what do you guys think this was made with?

http://www.studiocash.com/gal.jpg

Mutt 02-07-2003 01:42 AM

the native Photoshop filters are pretty good but most people have no clue how to use them, especially the bevel.

Xara 3D is great for 3D text logos. But I'd like one that could do 3D lettering like you see on some comic book logos. Ya know with a black outline? So far i can't really figure out anything to help me out, so i do it by hand, and that takes a long long time.

well there doesn't look like theres any advanced 3d modeling, so probably just a 3d text program, imported into photoshop and edited there.

Mutt 02-07-2003 01:46 AM

that's done with a 3D program, could be Xara 3D but the bend in the text suggests it ain't Xara unless they've added that capability.

Could be a Photoshop Plugin, forget the name of it, Word Art or something like that, i had a demo of it years ago, it did 3D lettering which you could put on a path, a 3D path not just a flat plane.

i'll go look.

Theo 02-07-2003 01:55 AM

i said that cause i used it in 97 or so (not sure if it was 3d back then) while building my own yahoo :glugglug

Mutt 02-07-2003 02:00 AM

yes Vertigo Hot Text will do exactly what you see in that sample you posted. Whoever did it just didn't use Hot Text tho, he applied other Photoshop filters to it. Possible he made it using a higher end 3D program like Studio Max or even Maya. Most guys have vast warez collections.

Mutt 02-07-2003 02:06 AM

i'm taking a second look at the sample, Hot Text has lighting effects but i'm not sure they're that sophisitcated, if you look at the orange part around the letters in the background and the surface of the gray/silver letters it's some really nice lighting effects, not sure Hot Text is capable of that quality. So might be a higher end 3D proggie that did that.

galleryseek 02-07-2003 02:26 AM

well everything besides the 3d in that picture can be done soley in photoshop. the lighting can be easily manipulated by multiplying the layers and changing the layer modes... the shadows were most likely done with the drop shadow in the layer effects.. and all of the "mesh" appearence was just done once again by a ton of layers with diff. layer modes. that picture is nothing compared to what the guy at www.chapter3.net can do. check out his work, heres a piece:

http://www.chapter3.net/imgs/vert/dv_02_02.jpg
http://www.chapter3.net/imgs/vert/dn...meninblack.jpg

even though a lot of his work has 3d, theres a ton of photoshop involved.

Amputate Your Head 02-07-2003 02:28 AM

my favorite plugin is the Travolta Head plugin.

galleryseek 02-07-2003 02:42 AM

theres actually a book, "New Masters of Photoshop", and I believe its really popular, the guy at chapter3.net authors part of it. and it tells how to do really cool advanced effects and such much like that of his own work, and easily the pic from metaformX:

http://www.chapter3.net/imgs/hori/foe_masters.jpg

Mutt 02-07-2003 02:57 AM

this guy's work is fantastic. I'm most interested in the gleaming metallic structures/shapes and the lights on many of them. Which programs do you think he uses most to create these?
Nothing on his site about how he creates his stuff. Wonder if he does pencil sketche first.

http://www.chapter3.net/imgs/vert/dv_05.jpg

http://www.chapter3.net/imgs/vert/Dreamweaver.jpg

did this guy write that book 'Masters of Photoshop'?

Voodoo 02-07-2003 02:58 AM

That looks more like 3DSMax or Lightwave.

MetaformX 02-07-2003 02:58 AM

I think thats all 3D studiomax Mutt
I've seen similar stuff, and they are usually 3d studio max

galleryseek 02-07-2003 03:01 AM

well, i believe the 3d elements were done in programs such as 3d studio max. and no, he didn't write it all himself, there was several people in on it i guess. i'm gonna go down to borders tomorrow and see if they have it.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...0405?vi=glance

his shit though is amazing. i've gotten real good at mainstream and pretty good with adult, but thats my ultimate goal as a designer, is to design in that type of style. he spends several weeks, sometimes more on any particular design. but his photoshop skills are probably that of the best, cause you can do some really cool things with lighting effects and 3d'ish effects if you know what you're doing. not that cheesy pre-set crap either.

galleryseek 02-07-2003 03:16 AM

mutt msg me if u can: 153785636

Mutt 02-07-2003 03:21 AM

i'm clicking like crazy off this guy's site, i am having multiple orgasms looking at this eye candy. These people are at the top of the digital design field. How much does a top designer in mainstream make? Do they freelance and then media/advertising companies hire them on a per project basis?

You can license royalty free CD's of this guy and other's work, pretty expensive but worth it, i bet somewhere in Warezland you could find them. I'm going to order 'New Masters of Photoshop' from http://www.friendsofed.com . I won't understand 3/4's of it but very interesting, they will take you through step by step how each design was made.

Big Monkie 02-08-2003 02:10 AM

Mutt,
Before you spend a bunch of money on plugins i suggest you learn all you can about actions, they arent just for saving time. Photoshop alone is so much more powerful than most people ever realize. Whatever you want to do has often already been done by someone else and there are thousands of actions that you can find floating around the net.

MetaMan 02-08-2003 02:12 AM

Who needs plugins when you have the solarize tool!

or Sketch>Chrome!

no need for pointless filters.

Mutt 02-08-2003 02:56 AM

yup i have lots of actions, some are great some not so great.

if you know what you're doing with all the Photoshop tools and filters anything is possible - but a good plugin or action will save you time, lots of it.

Yes but thats a big IF. I realized long ago that i would never be a ps expert, i just have too many other things to do. But there are others out there that are bonafide experts and if you hang around some of the ps forums and sites you can get some very sophisticated actions that have been created by these guys. Other than sheer automation, i find a big time saver from using (other peoples) actions is that they (other people) have already invested the experimentation/development time so i dont have to.
