MALÉV Hungarian Airlines - as og now - Suspended operations

MALÉV, my flagship carrier national airline, the Hungarian Airlines as of 4 minutes ago, suspended it's operations.

I was working for them, my most happy 5 years of my life was with them...

:( Sad morning for me...

And for everyone actually , who flies with them in the future, any time. It seems their tickets are all lost, SOME may receive SOME compensation, but nothing is guaranteed.

Paul&John 02-03-2012 02:19 AM

Damn I was planning to flight with them to Amsterdam.. they got a good price (around ~100eur for a return ticket)

DamageX 02-03-2012 02:36 AM

So Ferihegy will now be pretty much empty? MALEV had over half the flights out of there. Plus pretty much all ground personnel and check-in staff.

Paul&John 02-03-2012 02:42 AM

Not really.. wizzair, ryanair, klm etc will still fly in and out.. and I think its the time for those low cost airliners to make use of the following situation.
The handling personal is a different thing, but i'm pretty sure bud will take it over.

Word was going around a week ago.
Kinda knew it was going to happen. Terrible service, crappy airline.

I disagree on the service, I found them to be one of the better airlines from that point of view. Better than some giants like Lufthansa or KLM.

Malév had the best service in Central Europe. I'm not saying this - the passengers did.

40% of all the traffic made by Malév on Liszt Ferenc International.
Ryanair was out of BUD for a while, however they'll come back later this year (as announced by Michael O'Leary last week or so).

WizzAir is another Hungarian company, the biggest LCC in Central Europe. Founded by ex-Malév CEO and management from the money they got from Malév when they were sacked when the political regime changed in 2002. WizzAir was the company who told on Malév in Bruselles at the EU because the government gave well over 100 bln HUF to Malév in the last years to bail out from bankruptcy. This is - as said - against EU policies. As some weeks ago EU forced Malév to pay the money back to the owner (the government), this was the last knife in it's dead body.

No matter, that Alitalia and other big and smaller companies getting aid from the local governments on a regular basis.

I was working at the ground staff @ BUD for MA. I have many friends from this staff - the ground personell is not yet hardly affected, as the GH company is a different entity. Flying crew however already being told to empty their boxes and remove personal belongings from staff area... Also in HQ the ID cards are started to be collected from personel already.

GH has many partners to be taken care of, however some lay offs are obviously will happen.

Latest news is that the planes are already going back to the USA (via Shannon) for the lessor...

Never flew Malev, but have flown Ryanair. Can't imagine they were worse than Ryanair, so it's a loss loss for sure.

More than a week since Malév went out of business... a lot of tension is around, so as a lot of cry in the air amongst the ex-employees. Also, the country is in desperation and shock, seems now - everybody loved Malév.

The reason why I bumped this is the following video.

It is truely beautyful. Watch it in HD.
