Taxes

What should my bro get back on taxes? His salary is like $36,000. He worked 7 months since he got that job. Worked some other odd shitty jobs before that. He claims he filled out whatever on the h and r block site and it said he's only getting like $100 back.

I don't want to hear about your friends fucking taxes

There are probably hundreds of factors that determines what he'll get back.

He should get back anywhere from $0-$3,000

junction 01-30-2012 09:03 PM

There are too many variables involved to just say "This is what he made, how much should he get back."

What were his allowances? Is he married? Kids? Deductions?

One hundred does seems low. But depending on a number of variables, that could be it.

Yes you do. That's why you have replied twice before anyone else.

d-null 01-30-2012 09:05 PM

isn't it all based on how much he did pay in taxes, minus how much he was supposed to pay in taxes for the year? if the paycheque deductions were done correctly, shouldn't he end up even at the end of the year and not get anything or have to pay anything?

No kids and not married. Only claimed two things when he took the job.

I don't believe him that's what I'm getting at.

he shouldn't be getting anything back, if he does get something back it just means that he overpaid his taxes, which is a foolish thing to do...

it's no different than sending $100 to the government today, just so you can get it back in a year...

I get the feeling you just stabbed your bro in the neck -- seconds before you wrote this post.

Not sure what you mean by that.

The debt most countries are in is because the money raised in taxes doesn't cover the money spent by their Government. So if he gets back more, the US will have to borrow more or stop sweeping the streets in his area, or sack a policeman. Extreme but it's to illustrate what the money is used for.

Not married, no kids. Why should he get anything back?

He screwed up the number exemptions he claimed when he was hired. He should have claimed ZERO exemptions. Single taxpayers should not be claiming any exemptions, if your only source of income is your job and you cannot itemize deductions...

Geez, you don't know much about porn over the last few years, but I figured you'd know something about such a simple topic as this.

You're only required to pay so much in taxes. If you overpay throughout the year you get a refund. If too little was put towards taxes you write the government a check.

A policeman isn't going to get fired over this. Hell, my state doesn't even have an income tax. Tourism makes us enough money that we don't need to collect it.

If you aren't someone's dependent you can claim yourself. So he should've claimed 1. I think he said he claimed 2, so he should've actually owed money or close to it so $100 refund sounds close

pornguy 01-31-2012 06:25 AM

The US tax system is sooo fucked up its amazing.

No way to really tell other than sitting down and doing a 1040 himself and just take out standard deductions. Then try to take a few more that fit him by itemizing.
