MegaUpload Loses Top Lawyer After ?Outside? Pressure

oooops...

Quote:

A few days after top lawyer Robert Bennett announced he would defend MegaUpload vigorously in their upcoming trial, he has been forced to withdraw from the case. A source says that this drastic decision was made because the case conflicts with the interests of another client of Bennett?s law firm Hogan Lovells. It doesn?t take a rocket scientist to conclude that the pressure most likely came from the entertainment industry.

wait are you people actively going against due process?

just because you dont like him, doesnt mean he doesnt deserve fair trial. sorry to those in other countries but our country has courts.

as i said, witch burners.....

Obviously no one cares what happens to this man, and neither do I. But, are lawyers allowed to quit after they've agreed to represent someone? I know you could fire a lawyer, I was unsure if it was the other way around also.

Yes they can it is called recusal and it takes place because there is a conflict of interest that arises or the client lied to the lawyer, things like that.

retards here think this is good but dont realise nobody gives a fuck about porn piracy. It's billion dollar companies who have power everywhere and want to maintain that power. That's what's happening here.

exactly. the MPAA is now harming artists who are not even in the US and are not even on record labels and self promote.

I frequent (almost nightly) blogs dedicated to self promotion of bands, and their links are all dead now... the fact is they want to stomp out self promoting bands and force you to buy their crap.

I dont download metallica, but i sure as fuck download metal from russia etc,... and theres absolutely no reason why bands in Norway and the like should be affected by MPAA bullshit. in fact, thats how I find a lot opf bands Id never hear of any other way,... fucking hate hollywood and mainstream music.

i do not listen to it or watch it.

thanksfully many are still up, but will they be in a month? hopefully because they are not breaking laws, fucking witch burners

The MU porn domains went down too. They didn't leave them up. You can say what you want but porn in theory has the same protections. Especially if some big players pushed the matter. Copyrights are copyrights. US law does not work that if someone works in porn it is open season on them and they have no legal protections or rights. Now don't expect Congress to go to bat just for you though.

sperbonzo 01-24-2012 08:17 AM

who said they dont deserve a fair trial?

the incident only shows how far reaching the interests of some groups are

Tom_PM 01-24-2012 08:36 AM

Thats kind of ironic.. his own lawyer probably represents someone who he is accused if infringing on.

yes ofcourse, im not denying that. But it's not the reason they are doing this, it's a side effect.

Here's a comparison. The tax on tobacco constantly gets raised, here in holland every couple of months. The government knows it doesnt prevent people from smoking: It's 100% money related. But the people against smoking think it's a good thing because smoking is bad for you. These people don't (want to) see the fact that the only reason the gov does this is to get more money, they dont give a fuck about health.

It's not a reason, it's a convenient excuse for the masses.

I understand the conflict. Isn't it also ironic? Or maybe just simple poetic justice. Or like a big fat "I told you so", lol.

Barry-xlovecam 01-24-2012 09:19 AM

I read it was a conflict of interest issue -- Bennett's firm represents clients that might be damaged parties in this case but who knows ...

Keep all the top law firms on a retainer and they can't represent anyone you don't like or who fights for other interests than your own. :1orglaugh

If you wanna sue someone, pick a small city with 5 lawyers or so and then hire all of them :winkwink:

So open a site purely for Musicians to upload their music and fans to download it and sell ad space. Golden opportunity here waiting for you.

What does a fair trial have to do with a conflict of interest due to clients his firm is already representing?

Important note to all rich people:

If you look like the typical dipshit when taking a booking photo you should probably avoid breaking the law. If you look cool even when wearing a bright orange jumpsuit you can probably beat the rap just because you are... well... cool.

What are you talking about? No one is saying he does not deserve a fair trial. The right to a fair and speedy trial does not mean your pick of attorneys. That is why there are Public Defenders. :2 cents:

There's plenty of top lawyers who are very good that also act as public defenders. I once paid a lot of money hiring the top lawyer I could for a situation I was in...found out later that someone I know had got that lawyer as a public defender the year before. You just take a risk because some public defenders can be really good or some can be total shit.

Nice conspiracy theory lol.

I'd like to rather think that they are simply tired of all the piracy hosted by MU. And want to take them down. The fact that these small bands and artists content happens to go down as well is simply unfortunate. They should be hosting their albums and songs on their own, so things like this don't happen. Or at the very least spread out download links that lead to their own hosted page, which has links to download right there. Then when something like this happens they can just re-upload on another filesharer and update the downloads page.

mega upload paid artist to host their shit on their service

the average artist i deal with make $7458.81 /year from download commissions

so your actually arguing from them to turn a profit to taking a lose.

Well fuck you too.

If any other monopoly said that type of shit they would take the monopoly away from you.

1. there are many serious flaws with the complaint

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/201...behavior.shtml

2. it doesn't matter if he is guilty or not, the destruction of the service before he was actually convicted was the choice of the government. Napster and grokster were allowed to operate during the entire time they were being sued.

3. Under the law right now HE IS INNOCENT. IT called the presumption of innocence and it is the foundation of the american criminal justice system.
