Do you need a custom server? Is your old host going to play games when the tech is trying to move you? This happens quite frequently the old host will do things like shut off ssh and ftp while your trying to move. How many times have you changed hosting before and is your files in a pattern or all over the place? There are a lot of factors involved. And if you don't think the above things I mentioned happens ask around. :thumbsup |
Like JFP said, it depends on a many things; what O/S, any special software/scripts, is the content being moved over and if so, how much, etc
It is like asking, how long does it take to get a web site set up Or I remember how somebody put it a week or 2 ago?how long is a piece of string? |
Corvett, bang on with that one.
Can be a few minutes, to a few hours thats for sure. |
Depends on the amount of customizations you need. Also OS type
plays a bit as well. I find setting up windows machines to be more painful then a *nix box. JFPdude is right, former hosting companies love to play games. Especially if they host your DNS. Even more so if you are ducking out on bills(yes, it happens...a LOT). As for an actual time? Hour or so to build machine, another hour for general setup/security(this CAN last days if the webmaster doesn't know what the fuck they are doing and/or wants). Move content over(rsync is your friend, use it). Couple days of burn in, couple days for DNS changes to fully prop. |
If al the hardware is there.....24 hours...depending on the specs you want. Most of the time its done in a few hours.
|
My experience is hosting companies usually take 24-96 hours....although the actually install doesn't take long...if you bust their chops enough you can probably get it done sooner.
If all the hardware is lying on a table and there's nothing special about the OS you need...shouldn't take more than an hour or two to put everything together, install the OS and plug it in |
