good backup utility?

i don't want to install WD's smartware as i hear its a resource hog. what are good alternatives to use to backup your files to an external hd?

keep it simple
rsync on linux or dsynchronize on windows

That's what I use. I have a full image of my c: backed up every other day and I retain 10 backups so in the event I lose my c: drive I can go buy a new one and just reimage it and everything is back to normal.

GoodSync does a nice job. I've been using it for years and they don't charge for upgrades.
