Any veterans here? Step inside

Thank you for your sacrifice and we (at least those capable of showing gratitude) salute you!

What sacrifice would that be? Only like 0.00001% of the military enlisted for patriotic reasons.

Markul 01-04-2012 06:27 AM

Thanks.... from a NATO vet haha

CIVMatt 01-04-2012 08:57 AM

Well thank you and the same to my fellow vets and Marines

Sounds like someone who is cynical AND never served.:2 cents:

I enlisted in 1969.
I wasn't drafted, in danger of going to jail, or forced in any way.
I didn't know what I'd be doing or where I'd serve (most folks went to Vietnam).
And at a private's basic pay of $77/month......I can truly say that I didn't do it for the money.

Gee, I must be one luck guy because I met other people in the same situation....what are the odds of that happening?

(0.00001 x 0.00001 x 0.00001 x 0.00001 x 0.00001 x ect......) I think I can call bullshit on this quote.

Utterly ridiculous post.

WWII vets (of which there are still many living) -- Patriotic enlisting nearly: near 100%
Plenty joined during Korean, Vietnam, Gulf 1, Kosovo, and Gulf 2 for patriotic reasons. Plenty.

Granted whenever there's been a draft the non-patriotism % rises some, but not as much as you might think. And during peacetime a lot of enlistees include an educational/job-training aspect to their reasoning, but that doesn't preclude them also having patriotic notions, which if you'd bother to ask them you would soon know.

My dad is a WWII vet. So are/were many of my uncles. My grandfather was a WWI vet, got 5 chunks of shrapnel in his chest at Vimy Ridge. I can say with utter certainty that patriotism was the PARAMOUNT reason all of them gave for joining.

Damn right vets, all vets, deserve a thank you, and more.

A sacrifice implies something they didn't really want to do, but felt the need to do for the sake of the country. Almost nobody that joins the military says to themselves "I'm happy with my life and don't want to go anywhere, but gee, my country needs me so I better go fight!"

TL;DR. Feel free to skip this. We need "spoiler" tags...

Your cynicism - while warranted - is unnecessary. Even though I'm Canadian, I am truly thankful for the sacrifices American soldiers have made while not only protecting their own country, but also protecting the freedoms of others.

Its a shitty world we live in. The men and women who sacrifice the most to protect our lives, our lifestyles, and our freedoms; are also the ones who pay the ultimate price and suffer the consequences when adversity arises.

Hatred of war and violence should not be taken out on armed forces personnel. The VAST majority of soldiers would thoughtlessly and automatically risk their lives to protect my life, the life of my family, AND our beliefs.

THAT is beyond my sphere of comprehension. I am humbled and thankful.

My grandfather told me so many stories about his life as a career soldier that he scared me away from military duty. He literally terrified me. His missing ribs, lung, and the horrifying scar tissue gave me nightmares for years.

Now, though, I honestly regret not serving. It would have made me a better man.

I enlisted to get out of the house, before my parents drove me crazy.

Just ignore the guy that never served and has no damn clue what he is talking about. You can talk all day and you'll never get those types to understand anything.

Thank you :) Never forget those that still suffers. PTSD sucks!

Setraline really works. I've been so chilled out for the past 6 months.

seeric 01-05-2012 09:15 AM

I served from 1988-1993 and got out of the Air Force as a SSGT E-5.

I joined because I wanted to be something bigger than my small town of 22,000 people.

I joined to get money for college.

The military gave me a foundation to be as successful as I am today.

I would do it all over again.

:2 cents::thumbsup

Your first post in this thread was dumb. Arguing with me about what I said is sadly even dumber yet. With all due respect you obviously have zero clue about this particular topic nor the sacrifices many veterans have made on your behalf.
