Received a DMCA takedown notice but...

It's for an image on a site I don't own in a program I don't promote.

Does this happen alot? Could it be somebody just trying to make their GF site seem more "real" by spamming webmasters with DMCA takedown notices for it?

Seems like an odd tactic to use.

pornopolice.net?

DBS.US 01-01-2012 11:25 AM

Email them and ask them what's up?

BIGTYMER 01-01-2012 11:35 AM

Was it fron DMCA Enforcers/PornoPolice?

ArsewithClass 01-01-2012 11:39 AM

You know the image, you know the site that it belongs too. You do not promote this site, but where was the image originally from? Isn't it that program that is using stolen content or have they got rights to use the content, yet their affiliates are not meant to?

OK turns out its on a site that I bought over the weekend and had the domain transfered, however I still don't have the WP login for it and the image is hotlinked, its on a niceratios site.

I am discussing with the owner of the image and he seems reasonable, just wants to get the image taken down. I am asking him to be patient as I get in contact with the seller and get the WP login info, if I can't get that I'll just fudge the DNS and take the whole site offline, but removing one linked image seems like it would be quicker, plus it's a nice site that seems to have a little traffic.

ahhh mate, what a nightmare, I do hope that you can get the login? There must be another way to get into the image hotlinks than to take a whole site down?

Well I hit up niceratios on ICQ, not surprisingly they seem to be taking New Year's day off. Since it's hotlinked if they take down the offending gallery (or replace it with something not DMCA'ed) then my site will be fine.

If the site is now on your server just find the post using phpmyadmin or something similar. The database info will be in wp-config.php . If you don't know how to do that your host might do it if they don't suck.

not on my server. Seller begged me for a few extra days before the transfer since his ability to log into his hosting is tied to one of the domains he sold me and he needs the techs at his host to switch it to one of his other domains.

i'm sure you can login to phpmyadmin and just change the email address/password.

Wait. You just bought the site and just now got an DMCA? Wow that was fast. Maybe the owner knew ahead of time that there was illegal content on his site? Maybe there is others? You may want to look closer at your purchase.

Also: Why not just FTP to the host and delete the image directly? Did you not get the login details for it either?

Good luck.

he said the image is hotlinked.

Cool. Niceratios took care of the image so that problem is solved, now I need to get the site moved to my server and swap the aff links out for my own.
