GoDaddy loses 37,000 domains due to SOPA stance

Quote:

Hosting and domain registrar company Go Daddy has lost more than 37,000 domains in the past two days due to the company?s wishy-washy stance on the Stop Online Piracy Act.

The fleeing domains comes as a result of the intense backlash from customers and Internet critics after Go Daddy appeared on an official list of companies supporting SOPA. The internet responded by staging a wide-spread boycott where people would switch their domains to another registrar, which Go Daddy initially dismissed as having little impact on their business. Now it seems that assessment wasn?t entirely accurate.

Although Go Daddy reversed their stance on SOPA, it wasn?t before 37,000 domains were transfer off of its service, according to information reported by The Domains. The report indicates that over 15,000 domains were transferred off Thursday and another 21,054 domains on Friday. If you factor in the $6.99 to $10.99 fees associated with each of those domain registrations, Go Daddy is losing a significant amount of money.

Many on community link sharing site Reddit, which is where the boycotts were first organized, are skeptical that Go Daddy is really against SOPA. Citing reports from TechCrunch and Gizmodo, Reddit users point out that Go Daddy CEO Warren Adelman is neither for or against SOPA ? a convenient position to take considering his company?s customer base is fleeing. While Adelman admits the bill needs work, he said the company isn?t beyond throwing support to another SOPA-like piece of legislation in the future.

For anyone who?s still in the dark about the proposed legislation, SOPA gives both the U.S. government and copyright holders the authority to seek court orders against websites associated with infringing, pirating and/or counterfeiting intellectual property. The implication of having the act pass is that it could drastically change the way the Internet operates. For more information about the bill, check out this nifty infographic about what SOPA means for business and innovation.

update: This week, they lost around 72,000 domain registrations. At a yearly discounted rate of $6.99 (most registrations are higher), that’s over half a million dollars per year.

If godaddy does I will move anything I have at moniker over since they charge you for forwarding your domain.

That's gross sales only. They still have to pay a wholesale rate for the domain registrations, for those who don't get caught with any upsells the margin is near zero, maybe even a loss. I've seen a couple of articles about this that seem to make the assumption that selling a domain costs nothing and the profit margin is 100%...

Whats the problem? Probably just illegal tubes/forums with stolen movies, I wish every registrar would act this way so they cant transfer the domains somewhere else :2 cents:

They already have a drop in price, saw it yesterday, it's a premium host plan for what 70 bucks a year with the purchase of a domain which drops down to like $2.99 for that domain.. and I burn the hell out of their bandwidth for pennies

They definitely aren't severs on steroids but little budget little cost..im jusy sayin'

more than likely a huge chunk of those domains are paying GD for hosting to, thats alot more than a half a million.

This law is coming whether people like it or not. Assuming it gets through the Houses and is signed in by the President. There are companies behind it that make the million GD lost seem like a drop of rain in a monsoon.

America is likely to be losing billions to the piracy of it's intellectual goods. Now do you think a million going from one registrar to another, maybe both US based, is going to stop it?

V_RocKs 12-25-2011 04:55 PM

No way to know if it was SOPA or just the normal daily move... How many did they pick up in transfers that same day?

DVTimes 12-25-2011 07:11 PM

If it becomes law, it doesn't matter what their position is. They and you WILL comply.
It really doesn't matter what a handful of nobodies do with their domains

slavdogg 12-27-2011 10:22 AM

you guys can keep an eye on GoDaddy's name servers here
http://www.dailychanges.com/domaincontrol.com/

However this data is not fully accurate as it doesn't report domains lost by the registrar.
Only domains lost by their nameserver
