Louis C.K. makes a million dollars selling his new special for $5 online

I know there was a thread about this a week or so ago when Louis C.K launched the sale of his newest stand up act on his site. It costs $5 and he just asked people to buy it instead of stealing it from torrents. He just updated his site and showed that he has brought in $1 million from it in just 12 days. He is giving a bunch of the money to charity and in bonuses to people that work for him. He is probably my favorite comic so it is very cool to see him having this kind of wild success.

https://buy.louisck.net/news if you want to read about it and what he is doing with the money.

It sounds like it won't be in there for long.

tabasco 12-22-2011 03:20 PM

He clearly stole the $5 idea from Paul Markhman. He's still one of my favorite comedians though... and Louis is pretty damn funny too.

Luis CK is awesome.

That's awesome, guy is funny as all hell. But this method he chose will lose it's value after it's done a few times. I'm sure a lot of the sales are credited to his idea going viral and people linking others to the site.

He is greatly helped by being famous and being able to get booked on all the late night talk shows as well as having a publicist that can drum him up a ton of great free press. Add in that he is universally considered one of the best comics working today and there is a lot of good will for him. A guy like him could continue to do this and likely cash in down the road, but some unknown or even lesser known comic would likely never be able to do this to similar results.

What sucks is that some assholes will look at how much money he made and think he doesn't deserve it -- so they'll just steal it. Sad truth of the mindset of the entitled generation.

cybermike 12-22-2011 03:52 PM

I paid my 5 bucks a day after it went on sale.. worth every penny

seeandsee 12-22-2011 03:54 PM

Yep. Sad, but very true.

Everyone already knew he was rich. This was a thank you for not making it a pain in the ass to view content. You know, rebills, cross sales, automatic opt ins, DRM, restrictions and other bullshit. Oh, and pricing it at a decent number instead of doing PM math and showing that at $100 he would have made 20 million!!!

Louis CK has been anything but "lucky".

He's one of the good guys that you like to see be rich, he paid his dues.

Jarmusch 12-22-2011 05:56 PM

It's good to know he's not broke anymore. :pimp

On Opie and Anthony, he said production costs were about $200,000.

How the fuck it costs that much to film a guy standing on a stage -- I have no idea.

CDSmith 12-22-2011 11:23 PM

The fact that he's a likeable fellow that most folks wouldn't mind sitting down at a local pub for a beer with doesn't hurt either when people are deciding whether to pay a few bucks or just steal and share his stuff.

I say bravo to him.

His Infernal Majesty 12-22-2011 11:50 PM

Louie is great and I wish him all the luck in the world.

BIGTYMER 12-23-2011 12:02 AM

First of all, this was a premium video production, shot with six cameras over two performances at the Beacon Theater, which is a high-priced elite Manhattan venue. I directed this video myself and the production of the video cost around $170,000.
