Magic Lantern announces free HDR video firmware for Canon DSLRs
http://www.gizmag.com/magic-lantern-...00d-60d/20909/
"To record HDR video, Magic Lantern causes the camera to record each alternate video frame with a different ISO setting. Presumably you can set your "dark" and "light" exposure settings manually. In post production, the frames' exposures are blended together so that the darker areas are taken from the higher ISO shot, and the brighter areas from the lower ISO frame. Each frame of the video becomes a 2-exposure HDR image. Of course, motion in the frame provides a bit of a problem, as the two shots won't quite match up. For this, there's some sort of interpolation algorithm used to get the best image possible. From the demo video it looks like there's a few motion glitches, but the scenes still look and feel usable." This is really really really clever and a big step closer to affordable professional HDR videography. |
Interesting firmware add-on. I recently started filming some content with DSLR video, but the article said that this firmware is not available on a Canon 5D Mark II.

Yes this is correct, same for the 7D which I use. It doesn't work for these cams because these cams use different image processing chips. Are you happy with your 5D footage, not having too much trouble keeping things in focus? That was my biggest problem when starting with this.

I haven't read it yet, but is this an update with new features or a completely new firmware line?

Thanks for the share, reading up on it now.
