i am sick of them - nothing but costs. every month i pay like $600-$700 for tax, insurance, parking, repairs, gas etc... and i only drive like once or twice per month.

from now on i will be renting something cool when i really need a car, otherwise i'll take a cab

Old porsche = nightmare to fix and they fall apart. I take care of one here ('81 sc) and it is fun to drive but shit keeps falling off the fucking thing.

I bought a house in a neighbourhood where i have access to most things I need within walking distance. Save lots of money on cars/driving this way...

I'll never live in a suburb.

If you live in a metro area that has ZipCar or a similar service, then getting rid of your car is pretty easy.

I'm so glad I have the freedom of not owning a car in the city. Monthly car payment + insurance + $200 monthly parking + the inevitable parking tickets when I go out? Screw that.

There are ZipCars in the garage of my building and I can reserve one from my iPhone whenever I want. I just took one last night to go to the grocery store -- $14 for an hour and a half. Done.

CyberHustler 12-21-2011 02:31 PM

A lot of drug dealers are using zipcars as mobile trap houses in nyc...

MaDalton 12-21-2011 02:35 PM

Zipcar or similar has not made it to CZ yet

but we also still have a company car that i can use

Paul Markham 12-21-2011 02:48 PM

Knowing where you live and work, I have to say.

WTF do you need a car for?

Renting when you need it will save you a ton of trouble, always getting a good car probably new or 6 months old, no problems, just pay for the time and enjoy. And save you money.

We never bothered replacing the car Eva wrote off, because the odds on me needing one are so slim. Plus she's the prettiest chauffeur I know.

A hot female chauffeured driven limo would be cheaper. And you might get laid to boot. LOL

700$ monthly? How is that possible?I know there is some registration fee which need to be paid every year but still so much money kind a too much.Honestly i dont understood people who drive cars especially those ones who drive distance which can be walked in 15 minutes .

Roald 12-21-2011 03:01 PM

Apply for a McDonald's near your home. Problem solved.

Scott McD 12-21-2011 03:02 PM

It's the gas prices here that make me wish i didn't need a car.

I couldn't see me ever not having a car now though...

slapass 12-21-2011 03:04 PM

I do not have a car in rio. And I miss driving but rental is pretty cheap and easy so I do that about once every three months or so and go somewhere. The only thing is the car I rent is pretty low budget.

Rochard 12-21-2011 03:05 PM

This past weekend I picked up a third car - a huge used 4x4. I thought it would be great as a back up car in case one of the cars needs to go in the shop, plus I can haul stuff with it when needed - dump runs, etc - and this winter we can go up to the snow for some fun and games. $2k for the truck, just passed smog today, insurance is an extra $30 a month.

In the mean time my kid and I have fun trying to find shit to run over. LOL. Last night we discovered that when a sign on the road says "dip" even in a huge 4x4 you can't take it at 30mph. We went flying.

ottopottomouse 12-21-2011 03:09 PM

Couldn't do without a car.

Let me guess, you live in the middle of a city?

Good move! I have one of those stored in the Desert, insurance is nothing.

I just bought a CLS550, so I have 3 cars now - need to sell my dodge Magnum.

You said you do not understand people who drive cars. My point was not everyone lives in a city.

ie for me to get to the local grocery store it would be a two round trip if i were to walk. Probably the same amount of time if I were to try to find public transport.

D Ghost 12-21-2011 03:30 PM

I haven't driven in 4 yrs. Have never needed a car here. However, I am going to get one pretty soon, not out of necessity though. Would be nice to have sometimes just to cruise around.

Mr. Romance 12-21-2011 03:32 PM

I did not have a car from 2005 until the Jan 2009 when I lived in South America and it was great. I did have a driver plus I could walk to everything. Cars are a necessary evil and if you can get away without one...that is great:)

love cars. Took the step of fixing a blown head gasket and some other stuff myself as a little project, great decision. I had the whole engine apart, replaced alot....never did it before, it took a while but it was succesful and the engine is like new. Learned alot, and when you drive something you've put together yourself, its a great feeling;)

I get that. But making runs to the dump, huge home projects, taking the bikes to a state park, hauling around my wife's equipment... So much easier in a truck. The 4x4 thing is just for fun.

Of course you don't need a car. You live in San Francisco. You have BART and a bus system, and if not you can take a cab. You have everything you need in San Francisco and everything is a short bus ride away.

We don't have any of that here. We have a bus system that runs from 7am-5pm every day, but it's hourly, and it takes forty-five minutes for me to get to my dentist where I can do it in a car in less than five minutes. My doctor is two towns over in Roseville, I can't take a bus there, and we don't have cabs here. Same thing with the movie theater - The bus doesn't even run that late.

Lace 12-21-2011 08:02 PM

I live 15-20 minutes from a grocery store or anything so unfortunately I need my car. :(

Fletch XXX 12-21-2011 08:10 PM

i honestly wish i could exist without a car, its simply too difficult.

its easy if you live in french quarter and dont leave the quarter, but if you want to go back and forth across the mississippi river and drive around new orleans you need a car.

sucks, i much prefer a bike to a car
