What's a great food or beverage from where you are that isn't available anywhere else?

I know candyflip is from Rochester, home of the famous Nick Tahou's garbage plate.

Any food or beverages from where you live that are awesome and only available in your area?

Fletch XXX 12-21-2011 07:14 AM

new orleans is full of so much good food it would be impossible to list.

ive had "new orleans themed" food outside here and it has NEVER lived up to what is just naturally local and good here.

perhaps a good local beer brew or one of our world famous eateries

Mutt 12-21-2011 07:16 AM

yeah New Orleans is famous for so many foods - the po boy sandwich and the donut type thing called a 'beignet' or something like that.

Ross 12-21-2011 07:18 AM

The food I miss from Scotland is available world wide, I just haven't had anything close to as good as it. Chinese takeaway! In-fact, all takeaway is much better in Scotland than anywhere else I've had it. Now I want to go home to eat all my fav food.

i can second that... i've loved cajun and new orleans style food my whole life.. but eating the genuine stuff for the first time last year brought it to a whole new level..

which reminds me i need to go back.. need to do more focus on the seafood this time!

oh... windsor, not really known for its cuisine.. some say our pizza is good, but it's just better than it is in the toronto area, not like its better than what you can get in the US for the most part. Poutine is big here, but safe to say that traditionally came from Quebec and is available all over Canada.

haha that's funny. are there lots of Chinese people in Scotland? would love to hear Chinese people talking with a Scottish accent.

Asturian cider. 20 different producers just in the valley I live in. None of it gets shipped out of the area. Dangerous stuff as it's flat, and at 6% pretty strong.

I know what you mean about the takeaways. Can't find a proper chinese curry anywhere near me. But most of the Chinese takeaways where I'm from just south of London were actually Cantonese (Hong Kong / Old British Empire) so not that suprising I can't find one.

Fish and Chips is real nice at a couple places here, but not the same.

Indian, we're lucky there is 2 and they are both really fucking nice.

Don't think there is any food or beverage round here you can't get somewhere else either. If there is, it probably isn't worth eating or drinking :winkwink:

Beignets you can find in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France...perhaps more countries.

We have "stroopwafels". Sure they can be obtained in other places but they're quite rare.

Mutt 12-21-2011 09:17 AM

keep them coming - i like this thread.

Poutine is now pretty common across Canada, i love fries n' gravy but not crazy about adding in the cheese.

Beaver Tails are famous, never had one.

Butter tarts are Canadian, Susanna Sommers husband who is Canadian, brought them to the US, not sure how successful he was with them.

Salt n Vinegar potato chips were in Canada way before the US, maybe they were in Europe before Canada, not sure.

This is Wink, a soft drink made by Canada Dry, it's a complete mystery - they never advertise it and you can almost never find it anywhere, suddenly you can be in a store and there it is. just looked on Wikipedia and the only places it's sold is parts of Canada and Pennsylvannia and Virginia.

it's awesome, it's a grapefruit flavored soda.

What is gross about it? Plenty of meat on the head of an animal. Head, to me, is less gross than the ass of the pig aka bacon. :2 cents:
