How Can Independent Musicians Compete With Cost-free Torrent Websites?

Many indie bands complain about the prevalence of torrents, and the fact that it is tough to make any money from music these days. There's a famous saying that goes "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!", and it is by no means been a lot more suitable than in today's music sector, if you can contact it an sector. To do well in the long term, you need to aggressively give away free of charge music now.

The finest way to progress is one foot ahead of the other. Do not even fear about the industry or breaking in anyplace right up until you develop a strong fanbase. When you have that, you have the power. Don't beg the sector for a bone. Develop your fanbase and you've built your very own modest empire to sell to.

The trick to making dollars as an indie band is it won't come about for a although. Let go of the thought of selling $10 CD's and $25 t-shirts to 1000's of fans. Offer some thing for free - preferably your complete album for digital download.

"What did he say? Is he implying that we take down our 30 2nd poor quality previews and give away a large good quality download of our album for free of charge?"

I'm not just saying that. I'm saying you should advertise it. And this is only to get you on the playing field.

Here's a news flash. If you're one of these bands who releases 1 mp3 to the public, no 1 is interested. Folks want your merchandise and they want it for cost-free. If you don't provide it, they will google search for a torrent of your album. If they can't find a trustworthy 1, they will move on to the following band. Think about that. Those are the cold, tough information. Do you want to be on this person's playlist or not? Getting paid is not an option in this case. You never know who they might turn on to your music.

Think virally.

Be your very own torrent internet site. On your official internet site, you really should offer your total CD in high quality in exchange for an email address or mailing checklist signup. This way, you build your fanbase as your music is downloaded. Tag your site with pertinent key phrases such as "totally free music" and "torrent download". Then advertise. There are numerous blogs and music websites who will post your link and speak about your album specifically because it is free of charge. Take advantage of this. Draft a news release about your free of charge album and send it to all the independent music news sources. Any post about your band in the music press can now mention your cost-free album and where to get it. Program on building a enormous mailing checklist and a devoted fanbase you would have never had otherwise.

Once you have the fanbase, you have the power. You've constructed your personal neighborhood on the strength of your music, and a percentage of these people will want to acquire merchandise from you - deluxe packages with autographed posters, underwear, hoodies, vinyl, a poetry book, remix albums and unreleased tracks. Be imaginative. The moment your fanbase is there, selling physical objects are a definite chance. The difficulty is that most indie bands want to move backwards and market first. You can beat them and the torrent sites by setting up your personal torrents.

Let us know when they succeed!

:thumbsup

Just sweep the dirt off our head stones and place a note for us to read about it.

Meanwhile in other news :

Street hookers have found that by fucking every guy in town for free they have
built a fan base just waiting for more free fucks. Soon they will be able to monetize
this fan base by putting pay per fuck ads on their pussy.

That's one of the most poorly written articles I've ever read...

You gotta watch out for those those 30 2nd poor quality previews when you're worried about people accessing a large good quality download of your album.

no 1 is interested! I want it for cost free!

Wow. You actually read this illiterate spew and copied and pasted it? I think journalism should be more afraid of the internet than the music industry.

Seeing that its you, Porno Jew, who did what others usually do - I'm assuming sarcasm on your part.

As a former professional musician: Just as the internet was really picking up steam and Napster was at its file-sharing peak, I proposed that we (complete unknowns outside of our little fan base) release not only all of our songs on the internet, I proposed that we release the full master tapes so that anyone interested could remix and re-imagine our music.

I think we were using Cakewalk to record at the time, and I wanted to release the source tracks. Free access to our music so people could remix, recreate, and share. You'd have to buy a license to re-sell the music, but non-profit use would be wide open.

Everyone thought that was a horrible idea at the time, so now I peddle smut on the internet.

Oh, is a handjob like a tease video on a free site and not the whole fuck like on a
torrent?

Is that what you are trying to say?

Well of course not, because then you'd actually make some fucking sense.

The sex would be equal to merchandise or concert tickets you dense fuck. Music has been free for a lot God damned longer than torrents have been around. In fact, record labels used to bribe DJ's to play the shit. Ever fired up your remaining brain cells and tried to figure out why they might want to do that?

Music has not been free you imbecile.

ASCAP and BMI collect royalties from radio stations, television and night clubs.
They are paying for performance and distribution rights you silly child.

The torrents should have paid royalties like everybody else did and there would not
have been a problem....you pea sized brained globular cluster of idiocy.
