Yes it does.

If you look at the Alexa clickstream there for incoming traffic source its

7.8% Yobt (.com) tube traffic

4% ero -advertising (.com) purchased traffic etc

so most traffic they paid for.

Wouldn't all new extensions see a huge spike at the time of initial registration and then fall significantly after that? I don't see how this is a surprise or relevant to success or failure.

5% seems to be doing that. Most seem to be doing something else. The combination of popunder sellers followed by other common popunder sites (livejasmin) in the clickstream, the high bounce rate, the increase in average time-on-site when the total amount of traffic goes down, the big drop in traffic and the amount of traffic with no referrer all points in the direction of an untargetted popunder campaign.

If someone creates your site using an xxx - take legal action based on not having 2257 doc's for content - simple as that. Eventually in the next few years you'll be paying for redirects back to your main .com site.
