Do you care if there's a PHONE NUMBER on an ecommerce page?

How often have you bought because there's a phone number on the sales/order page?

baddog 12-15-2011 06:41 PM

it helps to know I can contact them

It depends on what I'm buying. If it's under $100.00, I'm less likely to care if there's a phone number or different options for support. If it's a product or service I'll be spending more than $100.00 on, or will be requiring support for regularly, I'll actually contact support first before the purchase just to see what quality of support I'm likely to get, and this is where a phone number is preferred over email or live chat.

Does it matter if it is a local number or do you think a 1 800 number seals the deal better?

A better question might be, "How often have you not purchased because there isn't a phone number on the sales/order page?"

Comfort is everything to cautious consumers.

How about 1 800 numbers? More comfort/convenience? More peace of mind?

To me, not important at all. What percentage of people still use a land line for the product you're going to be offering? I'd base that on how old are your customers. 50+, it might be more important for a 1-800 number, 40 and under, not so important as the days of long distance charges are fading from memory.

I think it shows someone has a real business. most of the time if there is no # its a 1 man show.

When there's a problem, a phone number cuts down on billing disputes, chargebacks, etc.

When it comes to ordering from a new web hosting company, I call them at 3am on a weekend or holiday to see if anyone is keeping an eye on things. If there's no phone number or no one answers, chances are they're not going to be available to fix problems when my server goes down. Toll free or regular number doesn't matter.

No, but I do need contact info.

Great feedback so far.

Contact page too. I'm less likely to buy from a site which has a simple email form as its contact page, rather than one which [also] displays a phone number and office address.

I acknowledge that a one man op can perform just as well, maybe even better, but unless someone has specifically recommended them I'll most likely move on.
