You can run your own dns server with http://tinydns.org/ or http://www.isc.org/software/bind .

No benefit if you're not having a problem with your hosts DNS. We run four DNS servers of own and we have service we use as well.

No real benefit ... Unless you want Backup DNS for your sites in-case your proper DNS server breaks
