Bad movies that tried hard to be good.

What movies do you think tried really hard to be good movies, but ended up being failures? I don't mean movies like Jack and Jill that just don't give a shit, but movies by directors who were actually trying hard. Example: I think of Spiderman 3, which was a pretty crappy movie, but you can tell they tried. Peter and Harry fight, Peter is corrupted by darkness and eventually has to rid himself of it. He also has to track down a robber that killed his uncle, Peter eventually redeems himself and reestablishes his friendship with Harry and Marries Mary Jane. It sounds like a good complex movie on paper but ended up failing hard.

Battlefield Earth owns this thread. You can tell that that they really thought they were doing something awesome when they made that. It's so bad it's a fucking masterpiece.

bronco67 12-07-2011 08:57 AM

Crash.

The crisscrossing/intersecting stories idea has been done to death.

The past few Harry Potter Movies sucked monkey balls. Too dark, too wordy and convaluded. Even some of the Star Wars movie blew because the were to talky.

Why would we expect you to follow something "convoluted"?

Unless I missed something Pete doesn't marry MJ in Spiderman 3, though they do reconcile. I think the movie would have been much better if they could have gotten Sam Raimi to come back to direct it.

In the Name of the King comes to mind. Great cast, crap-tastic movie.

Battle Field Earth was an Amazing book.

Fucked up the movie though.

Derp.. Sam Raimi DID direct Spiderman 3... ! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0413300/

Spidy3 wasn't bad... I think people were just tired of it.

I love Battlefield Earth....one of the kings of bad movies.

Another one that really wanted to be good but is relegated to the so bad it's good pile is The Room

MrBottomTooth 12-07-2011 11:43 AM

The Matrix sequels. Just seemed stupid after the first one, which was groundbreaking at the time for many reasons.

PornMD 12-07-2011 11:46 AM

I'd say Armageddon but it put me to sleep the first time and I haven't seen the rest of it since, so I don't really know how good it was trying to be, lol.

I stand corrected. I would have sworn that he was a producer, but not the director of that one - much of his particular flair was absent.

The other Crash w/ James Spader was fucking awesome.

As to the OP: any movie by M Night besides 6th Sense.

Fucking HORRIBLE movie...

That was so bad I almost liked it... up until the ending. Not quite as bad as Battle Los Angeles with its 20 years out of date "Rah! Rah! AMURICAH!" theme, though.

Watch them back to back. You'll want to kill something.

anexsia 12-07-2011 05:33 PM

Wait until you see the new Bruce Willis movie Catch .44 ....so fucking terrible, felt like a really bad version of Pulp Fiction that went horribly wrong.

cykoe6 12-07-2011 05:46 PM

Just saw one the other night...... Drive. It was like a cheap Micheal Mann ripoff. Lots of atmospheric shots that amounted to absolutely nothing.

Agreed. First movie that came to mind. Lost In Translation is another.

American Beauty. What a pretentious piece of shit that was. Corniest, contrived lines trying way too hard to be "deep" - or whatever passes for deep in Hollywood screenwriter circles. Like when the kid's showing the girl his film of a fucking plastic bag, and he says "Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world, I feel like I just can't take it, and my heart is just going to cave in"... get the fuck outta here, who says that kind of shit in a conversation?

Then it turns out the Marine drill sargeant is gay, not the guy who when he jerks off thinks of rose petals fluttering down on a girl. According to this piece of shit, that's what you fantasize about when you're jerking off, rose petals, not that young slut on her knees with her mouth open begging for a load. Yeah, Kevin Spacey isn't gay, he's straight as an arrow.

I really like American Beauty, but I'll leave my commentary out. The menu screen on the DVD is relaxing as hell to fall asleep to. :2 cents:

*edit 1: to the poster above you, I really liked Lost in Translation also.

2 of the most overrated movies that I can think of besides M Night movies are:

Butterfly Effect
Donnie Darko

icymelon 12-07-2011 08:06 PM

cowboys and aliens
