the internet used to be better, more fun

not talking business-wise at all, just talking about turning on the computer and surfing the internet for fun

sad that as the years have gone by and technology gotten better, it was more fun and more wild a decade ago, now it seems so bland and boring, seen it all, nothing really exciting about it anymore

Maybe you're depressed.

The internet was a novelty when it was new, i'll grant you that.

There's an article in today Independent, a UK newspaper, saying emails are dying. Due to the spam.

It seems people are using them less and less to communicate.

I know from my email box which has a Spam Arrest filter, that a lot of the shit gets through.

Again a great tool scum have fucked. Paid emails will be a solution I would sign up to. Make spammers pay. Even people like me sending a newsletter, if it's not worth a few cents. Don't send it. Again, free killed it.

It's not what it use to be that's for sure.

I miss the old AOL days. Internals/Overheads, TOSAdvisor, progs, private rooms. :)

I say the same thing very often. Its important to remember that the kind of people online and with internet access 10 years ago vs. 2012 are night and day different demographics.

On another note, the level of interactivity enabled with social networking and user generated content has lead to nothing significant.

I think that's a good chunk of why. Back then it was a small fraction of the people that are online now, and ultimately there were probably a much higher percentage of cooler people back then. Now, it's just a virtual representation of society which is shitty...if I wanted to mingle with shitty society, I'd do that offline.

I don't know about "cool". The real difference is intelligence... and the people who weren't intelligent were at least quiet.

The proliferation of junk and junk content can be traced back to Google AdSense for monetizing it and feeding it. The signal to noise ratio was a lot lower beforehand.

The generation of kids who essentially grew up with the internet and are now adults aren't exactly stemming the tide of stupidity or mediocrity either.

Agreed.
