I was curious how many companies were buying their .xxx version during this period.

So i took the top 1000 traffic domains on the web and ran a whois query on the .xxx version for availability.

I found roughly 40% of the .xxx versions were taken

You'll notice most return "Reserved by ICM Registry". Meaning they were blocked (tm owner paid the block fee), not registered.

That's how ICM is making money; defensive blocks/registrations.
