They've been doing it for thousands of years, it's part of their culture. Besides, it's not like those whales are endangered, and they use all of the damn thing, it doesn't go to waste.

Of course it does. First of all, The Faroese don't participate in commercial whaling, they do this once a year as part of a cultural tradition, and all of the whale is used. Second of all, they live on a craggy, remote island where not many crops can be grown, this is how they supplement their diet. Third of all, pilot whales are actually overpopulated around the islands and eat the fish stocks which provide the main source of industry and income for the people there. The amount of whales they kill doesn't even put the tiniest dent in the population.


You cannot condemn this while you eat factory farmed beef, chicken, pork, and commercial fished tuna, cod(is that what they use for fish and chips?) and whatever types of seafood you eat without looking like a complete hypocrite. IMO, this is much more humane than any of the techniques I just listed to procure meat and fish. Are you somehow more "civilized" because you don't slaughter your own meat? The most ironic part about this is that they're getting mercury poisoning from the whales because we in "advanced society" have been polluting the fuck out of the water around their island.

They're not dolphins, they're pilot whales; and they're in the Faroe Islands, not Denmark. I love how they dubbed this over with the theme from Requiem for a Dream to give it the extra horrific effect.:1orglaugh

The Faroe Islands are not part of the EU.

As explicitly asserted by both Rome treaties, the Faroe Islands are not part of the European Union. Moreover, a protocol to the treaty of accession of Denmark to the European Communities stipulates that Danish nationals residing in the Faroe Islands are not to be considered as Danish nationals within the meaning of the treaties. Hence, Danish people living in the Faroes are not citizens of the European Union (other EU nationals living there remain EU citizens). However, Danish citizens residing on the Faroe Islands, who hold a regular Danish passport are considered Danish citizens, and thus citizens of a Member State. One of the curious upshots of this is that the citizens can choose which passport they prefer, and thus switch between being EU or non-EU citizens.[citation needed]

They kill a couple hundred whales a year to feed whole villages, this is nothing compared to what the Japanese commercial whaling fleets do. It might look bad but it's really not. More of those whales probably die by beaching themselves every year than get fished by these villagers.
