The last time a space rock as big as 2005 YU55 came as close to Earth was in 1976, although astronomers did not know about the flyby at the time. The next known approach of an asteroid this large will be in 2028.

NASA scientists will track asteroid 2005 YU55 from the agency's Deep Space Network at Goldstone, Calif. for at least four hours each day from Nov. 6 through Nov. 10. Radar observations from the Arecibo Planetary Radar Facility in Puerto Rico will begin on Nov. 8.

The space rock will make its closest approach to Earth on Nov. 8 at 3:28 p.m. PST. The trajectory of asteroid 2005 YU55 is well understood.

At the point of closest approach, it will be no closer than 201,700 miles (324,600 kilometers) or 0.85 the distance from the moon to Earth.

I believe Elenin has passed this year already, although I could be wrong.

It's not if the current asteroid hits or not that causes issue, it's if it comes close enough to affect earth in any way that is a problem - magnetosphere, gravitational pull, earthquakes, etc.

The Magnetosphere is generated by the earths core and would not be affected by passing bodies like this. It doesn't have enough mass and would not cause earthquakes either.

I would love to believe that Scientist know exactly what they are talking about, and in some instances they do, god knows I hope nothing happens.. but it wouldn't surprise me if they hadn't miscalculated some affect that it might have on Earth, even if a minor one.

This was all the rage years ago when they put this in the news saying it would collide into the earth! The news disappeared then DEEP IMPACT and ARMEGEDDON came out lol

You are talking about Comet Shoemaker?Levy 9. Shoemaker?Levy 9 was the comet that flew by Jupiter, got broken up by Jupiter's gravity and slammed into it piece by piece back in July 1994. It was all over the news and of course generated lots of talk about the effects an impact like that would have on earth. Armageddon was released in 1998.
