General strikes are nothing new, if you want to know the pros and cons there is a lot of history that you can look to for answers.

There was a story on CNN today that talked about how several cities have now decided to stop arresting these people. They felt having cops clash with them gave them what they wanted - free publicity. Now they are just going to let winter work on them and see how resolved they really are.

It's already pretty damn cold in NYC with some remaining snow on the ground. The people who stay are going to be the really hardcore ones.

On a side note, I know a bunch of people that are protesting the protesters.

They are looking to change the world in some way using methods both tested and untested and you're crying about it every step of the way. You have yet to grasp what is going on, why it's going on or why the methods they are using are being employed in the first place. It's all documented, get to reading.

Um, several cities quit arresting protesters because it strengthens the movement but others have quit because they have been told to stop by judges, etc. They don't know what to do at this point is the main problem.

Then come up with a list and present it to Congress. Do something than camp out in our parks. All this movement has down is cost the public money, and lots of it. In the mean time, no one in Congress has done anything, and the White House hasn't taken any official action either.

After nearly a month of this, nothing has changed.

Right, there are some that have been ordered by judges to stop as well. I think a lot of places are now realizing there is no way for them to win here. If they attack the people and arrest them they get shit on by the supporters. If they let them stay they get shit on by those who don't support them.

I think a lot of places are now going with the "hope they go away on their own" theory. I have a feeling the movement is here to stay. The question is will they be able to come together and actually exact some change like the tea party has or will they just make noise and nothing else.

Most of the banks that said they were going raise fees on ATM cards and other things have now backed off of those positions and changed their mind. While some of that I'm sure is from angry customers I have a feeling OWS had a little to do with that.

Still, I agree with you in that they need to organize and actually get people elected or get things changed if they really want to effect change.

Governments are backing off so the protests remain "non-violent." Better the OWS Protesters set up little Hovervilles than break windows and burn vehicles. Now, that is a real riot and can lead to open revolt.

The politicians are trying to buy time but time has long run out -- people have already taken to the streets ...

The Bank of America has rescinded their plan for a $5/mo debit card fee for some accounts but if they think that by not invoking some insulting fee in response to legislation regulating their abusive practices is going to change the trends of late -- BofA is living in lala land ... The other banks were just not stupid enough to follow their lead seeing the opening for some commercial advantage -- proof that the banks can readily absorb the loss of transaction revenue ...

I tend to agree with you that a general strike isn't all that smart... If they're going to strike it should be targeted at federal agencies, the banking/wall street companies, and some big corporations.

I also find the entire camping out on wall street etc not all that brilliant either. They should be camped out at the congressmen/senator offices, congress etc. Change will come about when their actions put pressure on the politicians in a more direct manner.

Wall street and large corporations won't change what they're doing on their own. It has to be "forced" upon them by laws.

The protesters should be giddy right now though.. One more wall street company going belly up because of their brilliant risky investments and it's looking like it may have stolen investor cash.

I'll only comment that I was at the Hemp Expo / Cannabis Cup event in Oakland a few weeks ago, a trade event where thousands of folks and hundreds of booths were in the exact same area as the protesters are today. Coutless folks smoking marijuana literally on the police station's front steps and in the city hall plaza.

The Oakland PD was remarkably professional in dealing with us and earned much respect from me that weekend, because they stayed out of the event and kept a low, watchful profile on the perimeter.

First class, IMHO.

If they're having a problem now, it's probably not because of them... :2 cents:
