Giant Python Swallows Female Deer

A 16-foot long Burmese Python that had recently consumed a 76-pound female deer was found in the Everglades this weekend. The snake was one of the largest ever found in South Florida. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

You can see the entire deer inside the python's belly here.

It's a non-native species. Without any natural predators the population is exploding all over Florida including residential areas. Once captured, it is actually unlawful to release them back into the wild.

BTW, a female deer is called a doe.

I read it was to stop it heading North or something. It was too dangerous if that snake got into a populated area.

czarina 11-01-2011 01:25 PM

Florida has a statewide bounty on the pythons that were released into the Everglades as overgrown pets. They breed prolifically and are competing with the native animals for food.

guess a zoo or something was out of the question. I bet they were paid to kill it and they get to keep the skin. which is more money :(

Because they don't belong in the ecosystem. They are killing native wildlife, understand?

Inter-Sex 11-01-2011 04:02 PM

I've watched a show on Discovery about that - originally the asian pythons are not native for the US territory. These are usually runaway pets, or let in wild by the owners, for they cannot support or take care of them. The pythons along with many other reptiles these are threat for the other animals, who live there. Australian lizards, poison snakes, anacondas - these are just part of the many species the people let. You have to admit that's pretty scary to see a python with a "full belly" like the one they killed. Either the people kill it ( if it's organization for saving the species they probably have a good reason to kill him) , or the winter and the low temperatures will do it.

so are other things

Ayla_SquareTurtle 11-01-2011 04:47 PM

The reason they kill them rather than capturing them and placing them in homes is because these things are basically at the level of puppies and kittens at this point. There are more of them than there are people able and willing to care for them, bottom line. It's happening with other reptile species kept as pets as well. Makes me sad.
