Pregnant woman steals sandwich
Safeway manager should be given an award for rooting out such bad elements as pregnant women eating sandwiches. Kudos.
HONOLULU (Reuters) - A pregnant woman and her husband were arrested for allegedly stealing two sandwiches at a supermarket in Honolulu, resulting in their 3-year-old daughter being put into state care for 18 hours, officials said on Saturday. The supermarket that called the police was a Safeway in Makiki, a neighborhood in Honolulu. A statement from a company spokesman said Safeway was checking on the incident. "From our preliminary investigation, it appears we may not have handled this matter in the best possible way. We are taking this situation seriously, and giving it our full attention," Safeway said in a statement on Saturday. Famished mother Nicole Leczcyzynski, 30-weeks pregnant, was feeling faint and noshed on a chicken salad sandwich while shopping at the store on Wednesday, Leczcyzynski said in an interview with local television station KHON. She paid for roughly $50 dollars worth of groceries but forgot about the two sandwiches, valued at $5 each, according to Safeway. The family was stopped by security staff while leaving the store. Leczcyzynski offered to pay for the sandwiches, she said, but the security guard called the police, the couple were arrested, and their daughter was taken into custody by Child Protective Services, a state welfare group. "We walked a long way to the grocery store and I was feeling faint, dizzy, like I needed to eat something so we decided to pick up some sandwiches and eat them while we were shopping," she told the local station. Both Leczcyzynski, and her husband, Marcin, were charged with theft, Honolulu police said. Bail was set at $50 apiece. http://news.yahoo.com/couple-jailed-...015632685.html |

This happened to a friend of mine - except change 'sandwich' to beef jerky and pregnant to 'really high'.

It could have been a mistake, is it appropriate action ? the story is many people think it is not appropriate. |
If this was an honest mistake, she still has to take responsibility for it.
|
so it's ok to be a criminal as long as you shit out a crotchfruit?
|
theft is theft just think if 15 or just 5 came in there per day 7 days a week it adds up. pay for the samich.

Intent matters.
Just about everyone has done what she did. Accidentally put something in your pocket and forgot to pay for it, etc. She just bought groceries, what is the likelihood that she meant to steal a sandwich? Possible, not very likely. 18 hours of city/county/state resources used up because of a five dollar sandwich, that she offered to pay for once it was noticed, is pretty silly. If she was a repeat offender, totally valid arrest. Sounds like a simple mistake to me. |

All security would have to do was let them know, politely, that they forgot to pay for said items--they are indeed a customer after all. If there is resistance at that point? Or if they have been known to do this before? Then they make an arrest. |
It seems the "zero tolerance/zero common sense" thing has reached Hawaii. Bummer.
|
dont the cops have some OWS people to beat up?
|
They should have charged the unborn child too.
I mean he/she ate that sandwich too right? :1orglaugh |
