ya i got everything compiled, but it seems its not as straight forward as setting up a php script like you would quickly

ruby is for frustrated wannabe geeks :)

there's nothing you can't do in php and can be done in ruby... php is way more versatile

Ruby would have sense only for some specialized projects, same as pyhton.

Ruby and Python certainly have their own uses. I've Python used a lot as a sort of "shell script with a GUI". The comparison to PHP kind of made me giggle because PHP had had so many major problems. The upcoming PHP 6.0 looks like it will finally complete the transitition from a template engine, which was the original purpose of PHP, to general purpose programming language, though only for the web. You don't see any desktop apps written in PHP. Python is probably used on the desktop about as much as it's used on the web.

II would have compared Python to a language that is at least roughly as capable, such as Perl. Of course CPAN makes Perl stand out from other languages, but that would be a comparison beaten two general purpose scripting languages. PHP is not in that group.

CPAN is one of the reasons I still use Perl... it's mostly via the popular modules that Perl has evolved.
